I got the recent version of Mame and I am experiencing a weird problem where it seems to take Mame forever to start. It takes so long that I thought my computer had hung. If I wait long enough (about 3 or 4 minutes) the game that I ask for starts.

I never experienced this problem with older versions of Mame (I am using the Windows version). Is the new version more processor intensive?

do you have it set to search for new roms on startup? if so, and you have a corrupt zipfile rom, then ittl catch and hang up, at least in my case

How do I change it not to look up roms on startup? maybe that is the problem.

Go to options, then click on interface options.. when the screen comes up, if "search for new games" is checked, uncheck it. this SHOULD be what is causing the problems

The Mame version I have runs from the DOS prompt even though it is the windows version. I take it that there is another version that has a gui. If so, where can I obtain it because I never see it on the main mame page.
