Hello folks. I don't like most 3D platformers, because they have lost the goal in earlier 2D platformers. In most of those, you merely had to get from one end of the level to the other. You COULD, if you so desired, pick up various items along the way, but they were not absolutely necessary. In most newer 3D platformers, the goal has "evolved" into a boring (to me, anyway) collect or fetch type format. Recently, i got a very cheap copy of PacMan World 2 for Gamecube. I basically got it not really knowing anything about it. I was very pleasantly surprised! itr is really very fun, and has a great feel similar to the older style 2D platform games, in that there is stuff to collect, but all you MUST do is get to the end of the level.

Anyhow, I just wanted to let anyone who doesn't know already that Pac Man World 2 is great. I havn't played the first, so I cannot vouch fo rthat one. I also wanted to know if anyone knew of any similar games, that DO NOT include copious collecting. Linear and short is just fine by me. (And yeah, i already have Wario World).

I have'nt sat down to play Pac man world 2 yet. I'm currently pounding on .hack//infection and am trying to get as much junk as possible from an unlocking standpoint.

However, I do recommend Ms. Pac Man: Maze Madness. There's a lot of replay value to it and if you grab the Dreamcast version it looks good too. There is a PS1 version... but you are stuck using a PSx; my biggest complaint about the .hack series...

Someone who worked on Pac Man World 2 is a regular here at AA...

And I' ve already commented on how great this game is. The camera angles can be a bit screwy, but still overall a great game.

Pac Man World 2 (and part 1 on PSX) are cool games, much better IMO than remakes of Frogger, or Donkey Kong 64 for example. I also HATE the collectathons such as in DK64, Banjo Kazooie, and other games. But Cafeman jr. actually likes the 'collecting', so I assume research was done to figure out younger kids like that. ?????

Anyway, cool game, I like having the arcade games at my fingertips, and I'm especially partial to it because one of the programmers bought a Koffi from me. 8)

A collectathon CAN suck.. but make no mistake about it, the DK64 collectathon BLOWS. But, Banjo Kazooie rocks. There is a difference between the two. One is fun, the other is monotonous. :D

I'm trying to figure out why that is however. :ponder: Lets see.. It seems in DK64 you are more or less running around some area looking for stuff, and lo and behold the collectibles are strewn about. .. (i.e. walk down a hallway and there's a line of bananas. Go out to the pond and there are bananas in the bushes about. Quite frankly, that's no fun at all. It's too haphhazard.

But in Banjo Kazooie.. what makes it different? I think the environments are that much more interesting for one.. Also the little things you do, like turn into a little pumpkin, jump in a toilet and go into the pipes are far more creative than anything in DK64 (I liked turning into a bumblee :P). Also there tends to be some sort of 'story' if you can call it that or a challenge to each collectible. You don't just wander into it or press a switch to open a door. Rather, you have to save the tree, or feed the bird, or whatever.

It's kind of sad because I was so looking forward to DK64 after enjoying Banjo so much.. but I had to stop less than halfway through. I think DK64 pretty much killed the collecting thing for me

Yeah collecting is no fun. I'd rather go collect seashells at the beach (and enjoy the feminine beauties).

What Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie did was to make the collecting a challenge. It was the *challenge* that kept me coming back for more.

I have PacMan world 2. It is a really fun game and for those who like platform games, I would think it would be an enjoyable addition to someone's collection.

Now if only I had better arcade skills since I am stuck on a particular board and having some trouble getting past it :(

What level are you having a problem with?

The level that I am having problems with is called B-Doing Woods and has a set of trampolines and platforms to land on. I grant you that I haven't tried too hard on this level yet but I was enjoying this game up until this time but it seems that this level is a bit harder than what I was bargaining for.

Any help that you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks for the ideas guys, and here is about all the help I can give you on the trees and trampolines parts: I don't know if you have figured this out, but if you (not sure, you'll have to try it out, sorry!) either hold or double tap the jump button, you will plummet quickly to the ground. You have to jump and then NOT press the button as you steer towards the next platform. If that isn't the part you are having trouble with, let us know.

Also, if you are having trouble with that part, look out for the Ice levels! :)

That part I already know. The hard part is not knowing where the next platform is or over compensating for where PacMan is going to land and then have to retry again. This is something where I would like to be able to save as I reach each trampoline so that I don't have to deal with busy work to keep making the same jumps over and over.

It would have been nice if they had implemented a feature like from Tomb Raider 2 where you can save at any point.

What I like to do is to take several jumps straight up and notice every little detail of the area first, THEN make the jump.

Once you go through that area a few times, you can do it like nothing.

Butane Pain, on the other hand is a 'pain'

I couldnt agree more, Ms Pac Man:MM is a great game, I played this game for a long time after I gave it a chance after shunning it so many times before it. If you get this game you wont be disappointed

This game I think is available for the PS as well. I know that I played the game and found it fun but maybe I am confusing it with the PC version.

Well, due to the influence of the folks on the board here, I have finally taken the plunge and bought Ms.PacMan:Maze Madness for N64. I think it was made by the same folks who did PacMan World (and I *think* they did Dead to Rights as well!) In any event, Ms.Pac:MM is great fun as well. I had been meaning to buy it for a while, and the positive impressions convinced me. I also picked up a used copy of Klonoa 2 for PS2 on the advice of a friend of mine. That is a good one too for people looking for a modern platform game without boring wander-fetch sections. I have never played the PS1 Klonoa, but I hear it is similar, and also very fun. There are 2 GBA Klonoa games, but I understand they have more of a puzzle element to the gameplay. I havn't tried them either, any thoughts on those ?

If only the modern Marios, Sonics, etc. were more linear like PacMan World and Klonoa, I would buy every one of them!

Oh, also: have any of you tried out the (JP-only) Legend of Starfi (Satfi no Densetsu) GBA games? I know the second one is out now (or soon). But I am not sure they are worth the cost and effort to track down.

Actually my engine wasn't used for the N64 version, it was made out of house by a company called MassMedia. Although one of the programmers went there for a month to help finish the thing. :)
