Rumble Packs... Good or Lame?

I don't think "pretty much everyone" thinks it's stupid, just not needed in or used well in every game.

And I suspect it might've become a "bulletpoint item" for new console makers to checkoff if they're designing a new controller. They don't want to risk giving their competitors something to hit them with, or for Johnny's non-gamer parents to make it a reason to buy the other guy's stuff for poor little Johnny, or something.

And even Nintendo decided to ditch it in lieu of better battery life for its wavebird...not the controller that comes bundled, but still a first party device.

I'm surprised more lightguns don't have kickback features.

Re: force feedback, I'm pretty sure the big microsoft sticks sort of depend on A. a big heavy base and B. a heavily reinforced stick. I mean you could imagine something like the dualshock making it tougher to push some ways than others, but if a game developer over did it, you're in for more broken sticks...or thumbs...

I'll tell you one game I thought the extra "rumble" worked quite well in.. POKEMON PINBALL! :D I thought it was great when playing the game on the Gameboy how it would vibrate with each hit.. it really did enhance it for me :)

..That being said, I usually disable it in most console games. I don't really see a need for it and I find I can usually play a lot better with your good old non shaking controls. That's all the immersion I need.

I did find however I missed out on a lot of the "secrets" in N64 Zelda because I didn't use the rumble :ponder:

And it's also viewed a LOT diffrently by the PS and up crowd than the average user here.

I've had FAR too many conversations with people that think using a feature for the sake of having the feature is a good idea.
This would be the kind of people that got force feedback in Bust A Move.

Yah. I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I got my home GunCon and it lacked the kickback of the arcade one.

GAH!
Precision control with those demon spawn thumbsticks is hard enough without something pulling on them.

You need it for "Rogue Squadron" on the N64. Without a rumble pack you can hardly tell when you've been hit half the time. :P

I vote "lame" as well. I liked it in San Francisco Rush on the N64 when you'd land after a big jump, but it's also something I can do without. I don't think the vibration does my wrists any good. Besides, I have wireless controllers on my Cube, XBOX, and PS2 now, and I'd like the batteries to last as long as possible. With the Wavebird, the choice is already made for me ... and I followed suit with the other two. Going cordless is more important than shaking hands.

I guess I too could eventually go mow the lawn ... :roll:
