Thanks to the kindly assistance of Video Game Addict, I was finally able to get a home copy of this game for PS1. Let me tell ya, I'm HOOKED. It's both creepy and refreshing to hear Mr. Driller say "thank you" whenever you get him an air tank, and I'm really into the whole "reverse Tetris 2" like feeling of it where a bad drilling choice CRUSHES you under a mountain of colored blocks. Man, how many quarters/tokens/etc am I going to save playing this at home? TONS! Were there any sequels with more levels on any platform (PC console or otherwise) outside Japan?

DRILLA-SAN!!!!

And yes, there ARE a few sequels, though I don't think they made it out of Japan.

My wife absolutely loves Mr Driller.
I have the PSX, DreamCast and Gameboy Color version. The Gameboy version is surprisingly everybit as good as the cousole versions. In fact, I prefer the controls much more over the sticky DC version.
There is a Japanese sequel called Mr Driller's Theme Park (or something like that) for the GB Advance. It is a little spendy ($50 or so).

Cube version's already out in Japan! I'm hoping it gets a stateside release. :)

I only have the DC version, haven't even tried the PSX version of it. They looked like the same game thou, so I didn't think it's make much difference. You can always get adapters to convert to PSX controllers anyway. :P

I ahve the DC version and it is an incredibly addictive game. They used to sometimes have the coin-ops as prizes on the Price is Right :D

Mr. Driller is not an addiction. It's a way of life.

My friend in Ann Arbor is obsessed with this game..he's spent 15 dollars on it in one sitting before, at the arcade (and its only a quarter per play, do the math). Eventually he went out and bought the PSX one, but to this day he's the only man I know who's beaten Mr Driller's 5000 feet mode.

The Mr. Driller games I'm aware of:

Original for PSX, DC, GBC, and Arcade.

Mr. Driller 2 for GBA

Mr. Driller A for GBA (has Dig Dug as a selectable character)

Upcoming GC version in Japan.

I like A the best, got lots of characters and the store! :D

I've got it for the Dreamcast, and it is a very good game - love the bright coloring and the music. I've only been able to get to the bottom on the 2,500 foot level, and can't do that all the time. Definitely takes some thought.

I haven't played it as much since I got Wetrix. I found it even more addictive than Mr. Driller.

Yeah Mr.Driller Rocks. I have it for the DC, and I have it for the GBA (Mr Driller2, import). I just got 610K+ on the 500M for Mr.Driller2 on the GBA. I am going to have to go back to the DC version and see what kind of a score I can get on that again. It will also be interesting to see if the same strategies work on the GBA and DC.

Thanks for the info, one and all. :D I just beat the 2500 feet mode on PSX tonight so I'm pretty stoked. I'm gonna start working on 5000. ;) I hope they bring the GameCube game to the US, but I may import it if they don't, damn the expense. :D

Curious how people play this game, slow & methodical or fast & furious?

I personally go too fast, and find myself getting squashed to often. It's like I know I need more air, but I could slow it down just a little bit and still make it in time. :P It's been awhile since I've played this, I think I might break it out tonight. :)

My winning 2500 feet strategy was to be slow and methodical for the first 1500 feet, and by the last 1000 I cranked it up into overdrive drilling like mad to not run out of air (and getting enough matches to free up needed air capsules in the process). I managed to get all the way there with only one miss. :D

Hard to get matches on the boxes when they're so far apart, and they're surrounding the capsules once you get further down. drilling them takes too much effort. Last 500 ft. is tough, I just played it a bit, and I haven't beat the 2500 version yet. :( I got 2246 or something very close.

Honestly, the game is like Tetris Attack/Pokemon Puzzle League. When you get into the groove you just stop +thinking+ about where to drill and just _know_. Whenever I spent too much time analyzing what to take out and what not, I just ended up getting squashed and/or running out of air anyway.

Yes.
As with many other games.

I tend to take a moderately insane approach to the game. I drill fast, and try to smash large blocks whenever I see them.

I too, am a fan of Mr.Driller. I have been playing the GameCube (JP) game Mr.Driller:Drilland. It is great fun, and has several new modes including one based on the older Namco game Castle of Druaga. However, it is that particular variation that is giving me trouble. I cna get to the boss (yep, there is a boss!) consistently, but what ever I do, I CANNOT damage him. Nothing seems to work. Anyone who has played this part of Drilland, your input would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I have heard that Mr. Driller 2 (GBA) is going to get a release in Europe sometime in the next few months. It will have English language as one of the selectable languages. Yay! Still no English Mr. Driller A(ce), though.

my record on survival mode is 6000 ft, im trying to get to 10k

but if you get one great run in that game, once you lose, it seems to be impossible to repeat it in the same session.
