Hi....just picked this up at blockbuster for 19.99........wow what a great game.......I like it better than SM64.....

The FLUDD device is really cool too!!!

I just opened the 2nd level (lighthouse) ....

Also still stuck getting all the red 8 coins on the first level....will give it another shot later....

Great graphics and control....although the camera is a pain sometimes...

Any other thoughts or opinions on this game?
Would love to hear others thoughts/

Thanks

I just started playing this game last week (I got it when it came out and never got around to it), and I really like it. Unfortunately the camera really kills most of the fun it the game. I spend most of my time fighting it instead of the enemies. I'm almost done with the game (I'm in Pinta Village). One gripe I have is that the boards are really imbalanced. One board is mega easy and the next is mega hard. There doesnt seem to be any pattern to it.

I'm with Tempest. I think Nintendo REALLY SCREWED UP on this game. The Camera angles just make it not fun to play in many missions..

Plus, Personally, I suck at parts of this game, and I'll never be able to finish it just because I can't do a triple corner jump with a spin onto a 2 foot ledge. More like Super mario gymnast.

I really liked SMS at first, but the more I played it the more realized how much more I had enjoyed SM64.

I hardly play it now, Resident Evil Zero and that Star Wars Rogue Squadron III preview disc takes up all my time.

Yeah Rogue Leader is next on my list of games I need to get to. I'm so behind... Hell I just finished Final Fantasy X last week!

It was a decent, fun game.

Didn't have any problem with the camera.

My biggest problem with it is...I dunno, it felt more Island-y than Mario-y, theme wise. Mario 64 was so clever because it really was a 3D version of what was 2D before, and I guess they didn't want to risk just repeating themeslves, but still.

I love the acapella version of the original song on the minilevels.

I don't mind about the camera too much. I do aggree you have to spend a lot of time moving the thing around to see what you are doing, but I've played enough games with movable camera's to be used to it.

My gripe is the overall visual apperance of the game. Very washed out, like the contrast is too high. THAT bothers the hell out of me. It's such a pretty game, but you can see that some of the detail is lost because of it. :x

I've yet to see any game that really shows off the GC. Even Luigi's Mansion had it's share of annoyances. Color banding. What, the GC isn't 24bit color? It can't do smooth color transitions? Grrrrr. :x

I hear mixed feelings about it. I have not yet gotten this one, and I thought I'd have been one of the first. But when I read reviews saying it wasn't as good as Mario 64, I decided to wait.

And now it's getting cheaper so soon I shall buy it. For now I must wait.

I love Mario games, and I've yet to play a bad one (of course, I should note that I've purposely avoided stuff like Mario Hotel and Mario Is Missing  ).

I haven't played a lot of Mario Sunshine, but it seems excellent to me. My only complaints are that the story is stupid (but it's a Japanese games, and that seems about par for the course when the Japanese make games), and the whole FLUDD thing is too gimmicky. I'd rather see a variety of powerups (ala SMB3) instead of one do-all device that you have throughout. I consider both of those rather minor complaints though.

Still waiting for Mario 128... :ponder:

Still waiting for worthy Super Mario Bros 3 successor.

Nothing since 3 has been worthy enough. Did they lose their sense of design after they released it? Mario World was cool, but not enough powerups. Mario 64 was cool, but had even less power ups. (The hats do not count. They never lasted, Mario simply didn't have ANY power ups. No mushrooms to grow bigger, no fireballs. Nothing. NO YOSHI FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! He's in the game. But he's not rideable. Instead he gives you 1-Up's. And talks. YOSHI DOES NOT TALK!! WTF? I WANT TO RIDE YOU!!!)

They lost their touch in 1990. I tried to tell them to get it back, but they emailed me and told me to try the game [Mario Sunshine] first before complaining. I tried it, I'm STILL COMPLAINING. HEAR ME, NINTENDO?

Ditto.. I loved SM64 and was looking forward to SMS.. but I dunno, I just lost interest after a while . I can play SM64 and still feel the same fun however.

Normally I'd agree with you... except for the fact that the majority of the powerups in SMB3 were completely underused. You had the Mushroom, the Fire Flower, and the Raccoon Suit, and used all three pretty regularly (although the fire flower really took a backseat to the raccoon suit). But how often did you use the other powerups? Stars, Tanooki suits, Hammer Bros suits and Frog suits were far and few between, Kuribo's Shoe (which I still consider my favorite powerup ever) only showed up in one level. Stuff like Jugem's Cloud, Hammers, Warp Whistles and such didn't really feel like "powerups" to me. So essentially, the game degenerated to using three powerups.

Now look at Super Mario World... you again get the Mushroom and the Fire Flower, and you get the Cape Feather instead of the Raccoon suit. This already equals what was really used in SMB3, and then you get to throw Yoshi into the mix. There were some extra abilities you could get by swalling colored shells with Yoshi (or getting different colored Yoshi's), and some goofy stuff like the P Balloon that made Mario float around, but like the Tanooki suits, they just weren't used often enough to care about (Correct me if I'm wrong, but the colored Yoshi's only showed up on Star Road I think).

So in my opinion, when it comes to powerups, the two games are essentially equal. However, Super Mario World definitely gets some extra points for added techniques... being able to carry P switches really adds to the game, and the spin jumps were a nice way to mix things up too. SMW also had a crapload of secret stuff that really made me want to play through over and over (Super Special World was awesome!). Personally, I consider SMW to be the better game... SMB3 is still excellent (especially considering it's a NES game), but I definitely spent more time with SMW over the years, and will probably spend even more time with it in the years to come.

You're right about Mario 64 though... there aren't any "real" powerups... the hats are pretty lame, and are too rare to really care about at all. Hell, even Koopa Troopa shells (which were really fun to ride in my opinion) only show up a handfull of times in the game! Luckily, they gave Mario a heck of a lot of abilities so that you generally didn't need the caps... but it still felt like the game had changed a lot to me. It also feels weird for Mario to be punching and kicking enemies, but whatever...

One thing that I really miss that I wish they would put back into new Mario games was the way you could choose your character in SMB2. I'd love to be able to go through Mario 64 as Toad or Luigi (I'm still surprised they forgot to stick Luigi in the game at all)... or even play as Peach and try to rescue Mario (!!). Hopefully Nintendo will look back to some of their previous games for inspiration (even if this game sort of wasn't theirs...)

i liked mario 2 the most, im in the minority, but i thought the graphics were cleaner than in three, and the different characters gave the game a lot more replay value. plus Wart was one tough mo-fo of a boss, and the ending animation nearly gave me a heart attack when i first saw it

the ending of 3 sucked hard, and it was way too long of a game to not have any sort of password/battery save. 2 was just right with length :)

Agreed. 2 is my favorite, but I don't think any of them are bad. I liked the SNES SMW much better then SMB3.

Yeah, for 2D, I'm a "SMB2" fan. Other than the gameboy games it was the only one I got through on my own. I don't remember the animation giving me a heart attack, but I kind of liked the theme of the ending.

Ah.

Yeah, it was REALLY pretty, a quantum leap...I wouldn't have guessed that the NES could do that.

Wart is easy. Easier than Bowser.

You can get behind Wart and he can't hurt you. Simply use Princess, grab the veggie and float behind him. Throw it in when he opens his mouth.

Bowser doesn't let you get behind him. In 1, he turns around anyway and in 3 he can go all over the screen so there's no hiding.

And if possible, a P-Wind for the last final Tank level before the castle. Moral is to save up as many clouds and wings as possible and just breeze through. If you can get to the castle and use a wing in the last tank, if you die you'll still go right back to the castle gate.

Also, save your lives.

I wouldnt consider mario2 as a mario game, i have the original famicom disc and its definately not a mario game which ive played to death. Only transformed for the western world, Its an excellent game none the less. All the mario platforms are excellent imho including smss, The idea of buying smss was not to think it was going to be as groundbreaking as sm64. Its also the 1st mario game that is a real challenge.
