Is this a common thing? as I have never heard of homebrews on the current consoles before.

Probably nothing but a pirate copy.

I have about ten homebrew games for the xbox. However I'm guessing this Robocop is a pirated copy of a crappy game.

It's also worth remembering that "T-Tris" and the "P.I.T.S." carts were released for the Lynx when it was a commercial entity (in 1993 or '94). :)

It takes a great time of time to create a truly good game on a console. I don't think you are going to see too many homebrews on any modern system because of the time that it takes a typical game for those systems.

The XBox is basically directX isn't it. I don't really get into the programming aspect but I thought it was really close.

Not only does it use (some form of) DirectX, but the whole architecture is basically a computer, so anyone who can program a computer can probably learn to program an XBox without much pain. Other systems like the Gamecube and PS2 use somewhat unusual hardware which makes them more difficult to learn (learning the XBox from scratch might be difficult too, but coming from a PC background would ease the process significantly).

Although I'm not very knowledgable about the XBox community, I was under the impression that there existed no public domain tools for creating XBox software (such tools DO exist for the Dreamcast), so any homebrew software for the XBox is most likely written using a pirated copy of Microsoft's development software, and would therefor be illegal. Naturally, you also need to mod your XBox to run the software, which is also illegal (well, it's a grey area at best). On DCEmulation, anything that was developed with an illegally obtained dev kit is generally considered warez.

You can also find stuff on eBay like NES emulators for the Dreamcast, which are completely illegal to sell for a variety of good reasons (mostly because the author chooses to forbid the sale of the software, but also because they include rom images and such). If you do see an emulator disk for the Dreamcast (aside from the Sega Smash Pack that Sega released), then you should report it to eBay so they can stop the auction. I don't know if this Robocop thing is illegal like this though.

As opposed to the amount of time it takes to create a good 2600 game?

Yeah. I hate the Xbox for that. I've seen websites that talk about & show screen shots of home-brewed games, but no downloads, because they are all made with XDK.

:( :x (Too lasy to find a smiley that stomps around a few times then bursts into flames, so just try to visualize it!)

I want Pong & XMarbles more then anything else. Mostly just to test these PC based Xbox emus.

I was just curious, it's no good to me as my Xbox isn't modded - for Xbox live reasons.

I am tempted to get a second Xbox and mod it, just to see how far the rabbit hole goes so to speak. Sort of hoping it will bring back all those hacking feelings/memories of my Commodore 64 days :ponder:

All you need to do is install a disable switch when you do the mod, and then you won't have any xbox live issues. ;)

Yeah, but rumour is that the new update will still detect this. Also I have heard from a lot of people on their second account due to forgetting to switch.

A new Xbox should be quite cheap around Xmas time. I've no idea what it cost to chip one though.

Forgetting the switch. Yes, all to easy. But I question if the new updates can really detect a mod with the switch enabled. Maybe if you're using a real add-on modchip, since there are ways to see both add-on & factory roms together. But if you do a TSOP flash, I wouldn't see how. Like if you have an older xbox with a 1meg tsop chip, and you only flash half of it. With the full A19 switch, you're can totaly bank out your reflashed half, and any attempt to read it would just roll back across the half it can see. IE, banks 2 & 3 = 0 & 1. Thats how the newer v1.3 xbox's work with the 256k tsop chips. They are relying on the standard default bank handling.

I would foresee compatbility issues between xbox versions if they have something that could read beyond hard-wired bank-selection.

If you are technicaly inclined, you can do it for free. Well, 20 bucks for "007: Agent Under Fire" game (if you don't already have it). I doubt I would be allowed to go into much detail here.

Hint: "TSOP Flashing".

Don't forget about pawn-shops & stuff. You can get tested working used xbox's for $120 easy.

Just remembered...
There were many homebrew games for the PlayStation made by owners of the NetYaroze kit.

Of course, distribution was limited to NetYaroze owners unless you talked Sony into selling the game(and you HAD to talk to Sony, as the contract they made you sign to get the NetYaroze gave them "dibs" on your creation if you wanted to go commercial with it).
