The PS2 is the most popular console of this generation, with backward-compatibility to the most popular console of the last generation (PS1), and has the widest variety of games, and SOME of the best/most unique games like Final Fantasy, Grand Theft, RC Copter, Gran Turismo, Rez, Ico, Dance Dance Revolution, and so on.

Seems to me that an avid gamer NOT owning a PS2 is like someone shooting themselves in the foot.

So how come you don't own one?
(Just curious.)

I think I'm too satisfied with my Dreamcast and PS1 to buy a PS2 yet. Most of the games you mentioned are sequels and don't add too much to the must have equation. I'm happy playing Rez on the DC and GT2 on the PS1. And since I don't really get into the FF games I can always go back and play FF7 and FF8 on the PS1 if I want some random battles and other tortures :)

But I agree there are some good games out for the PS2 so I'll be happy to pick it up when it's under $50 in a few years. Looking forward to trying out Ico, Activision Anthology, and others, I just don't need to now. Oh, and some of the big games are just as easily played on the PC, I have Madden 2004 and GTA3 on my high-end PC. So thats another reason not to rush to the PS2.

I own a PS2, its been gathering a lot of dust. Though i enjoyed Ico very much, there just isnt enough originality on the console. And if a game is being ported to Cube, Ill wait for it on cube. I also thought Ratchet and Clank was fun, but not enough Clank.

I did have a PS2 and a GameCube and the Xbox. I sold both PS2 and Cube because the Xbox is better. Now that GTA is coming out for the Xbox, I see lttle point in PS2 ownership unless that eye toy really floats your boat.

PS2 is also overpriced and underpowered when compared to both Cube and Box. Anyone who buys a PS2 now is either getting it for a killer game they love or because their mates have got one or because they are sheep following the herd. Those who have owned one since the earlier days bought it for the reason that it was at the time the best platform available.

I own a PS2. The auction to sell it finishes today on eBay.
I thought it might be good to get the console with the most games, you know, so I can have a little choice (I also own a GC - great games, long waits between them).
It confirms what I suspected all along. The majority of people are usually wrong. There is nothing on the PS2 that interests me - and in a catalogue of, good grief - I don't know how many, games, that's not too good. All the interesting stuff comes out on the GC and (though I'm loathe to admit I want one) Xbox.

I don't think the PS2 will be looked back on as fondly as, say, the SNES or PS1. There haven't been that many groundbreaking titles for it - just a bunch of sequels mainly. Is that what they meant by PS'2'?

I have a PS2, but it gets FAR less play than my GC. The GC just has more games I like, and with Rogue Squadron III and Resident Evil 4 coming soon, I don't think I'm going to be swayed (though Resident Evil Outbreak sounds very cool).

Actually, I have a better time playing my PS1, to me it was the better system. Maybe not graphics-wise, but there are some really, really great games on it. Not to say the PS2 doesn't, but there's more I like on the PS1.

A couple of my friends:

One had PS2, one had XBOX,

Played both, liked xbox a LOT more, superb Halo, pulled me into buying one, that combined with the price drop, and the fact that the limited edition European console in see thru green with 2 x xbox s-pads, came out just before my birthday :)

I wanted to play Panzer Dragoon Orta too... an xbox exclusive by Sega, and most Sega games are on xbox!

i have a PS2, its ok, my favorite games have been Virtua Figher 4, REZ, and Final Fantasy X. the Dreamcast had far more quality games in its lineup. I also have a cube, but outside of Nintendo and Sega titles, its been pretty dry here too. Ive already decided that im not going to buy any next gen consoles unless there is a killer app that gives me the same feeling i had when i first played super mario bros, sonic the hedgehog, or street fighter II. I dont see it happening

i do plan on getting an xbox, but the mod capabilities are far more interesting than most of the games available

I loved that feeling. Id love to get it again.
I mean the first time you sit down and play smb or sonic, it was great. ;o)

and to keep on topic, I have an xbox, because i played the cube and ps2 and just chose the xbox. ps2 had a few exclusives to catch my eye. I wanted to play the new tenchu, but havent heard anything much about it.
But I got the box so i could get splinter cell, metal gear 2, ad a few others. I just thought the xbox versions of a lot of games that came out on multiple systems were best. And playing halo and several different friends' houses didnt help the other systems either.

I own a PS2... but my Dreamcast seems to get much much more use.
*I also only have about 4 games for the PS2*

My main reason for getting the PS2 back then was GTA III, now it's avail for Xbox right?

I got GTAIII, Vice City, Freakstyle, Max Payne and Mister Misquito.
I love Burnout 2, all are avail for xbox except Mister Misquito I do believe... plus, XBox has all the Sega games :)

I was a big nintendo fan when the generation started!!
So I opted for the Cube!
But seeing as the Cubie didnt have DVD capabilities!
I opted for a PS2!

Got the PS2 w/ 10 Games:
1. Dark Cloud (Greatest Hits)
2. Robotech Battlecry
3. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (Greatest Hits)
4. Max Payne
5. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
6. Gran Turismo 3 A-SPEC (Greatest Hits)
7. Grand Theft Auto: III
8. NBA Live 2002
9. Triple Play 2002
10. Madden 2003

The PS2 I got because of Gran Turismo 3, GTA 3 and Vice City

But after owning my PS2 for a while I traded it for an XBOX (Summer 2003)
WHY?
Because I had allready beaten GTA3, Vice City, Tony Hawk, ect ect
AND THE FUN WAS GONE!!

But eventhough Im not into the NOW consoloes! I still have my box collecting dust!

I would infer that If I had gotten a cube from the beginning It WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER!!

Well, I've tried the PS2 and it's got some nice games.

However, I get so much more enjoyment out of playing on my DC or for that matter my Genesis. I really don't see any point in buying a PS2 right now allthough I WILL buy one when it hits the magic $50 mark :D Just as I will buy a Cube and an XBOX when they come down to the price I'm willing to pay. So probably I'll be getting a Cube first at least the way it looks now.

Just my two cents.

Cheers!

I actually don't have any of the new systems yet... I really want a Gamecube, but with rumors of price drops, I'm giving it some time. I don't have any plans to buy an XBox or PS2. Neither of them have any games that I'm at all interested in. Believe it or not, I'm not into Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo, or even Metal Gear Solid. I'd much rather have Mario Sunshine, F-Zero GX, and Legend of Zelda. It's worth pointing out that I also don't have a Playstation 1. I've seen them around for super cheap, but with so few interesting games, I've never felt it was worth while.

There are actually a handful of games that I wouldn't mind getting for the system though... Rez is amazing (although I already have the Dreamcast version), the upcoming ESPN Hockey looks like it's going to be excellent (Finally! A hockey game with historic teams!), and I do like the Megaman X games. That's certainly not enough to convince me to buy a PS2 though.

There's also the fact that Sony has claimed that the PS3 (I really hope they don't call it that) will be backwards compatible as well... so if anything, maybe I'll just wait for that one instead (Assuming some worthwhile games for it come out).

i dont own a ps2 cuz i think its a peice of garbage - most of the games for it (to me) are very repetitive (much like the ps1) they have too many japanese style games that i dont like - and just too many games that dont scream 'come and and play me im great' - the loading times are annoying and i hate memory cards for storage - i cant stand the playstation controller and i hate sony - The DC is much better system, i say, than the ps2 - its a better piece of hardware and have better games to play on it - sux its "gone" tho

but yea :)

About all I've really got for the PS2 is my ps1 games and Rez. Now Rez is a grand game, but considering it came out on the dreamcast, if you're willing to import, it's not a deal maker.

So why did I get a PS2? Not for the final fantasy games. Not for Kingdom Hearts. Not for GTA. I got it for Gradius 5, the Space Channel 5 collection, Shinobi, Tenchu 3, guilty gear XX, virtua fighter 4 Evo, metal slug 3, suikoden 3 and a few others I'm not awake enough to remember.

Personally I like my gamecube more at the moment, but I'll be the first to admit there's not as many upcoming games for it that I'm willing to pay full price for. But F-Zero, I'll be damned if thats not reason alone to get a cube.

As for Xbox, well, my pops has one, and I only ever play 3 games for it-Halo, Steel Battalion, and Panzer Dragoon Orta. I'm looking forward to Raw 2, and Halo 2, and the sequel to Steel Battalion (for online play), ninja gaiden looks sweet, and hell, if any good 2d fighters come out, chances are they'll show up on there for online play (makes me wonder why guilty gear XX didn't).

The PS1 is awesome. Plenty of good games on that.
Raystorm
R-Type Delta
Vib Ribbon (import)
Suikoden
Suikoden 2
Azure Dreams
Mega Man X4/X5/X6
Asteroids
Chrono Cross
Gekioh Shooting King (Daioh)
Street Fighter Collection 1/2

I have a PS2 and maybe 4 games. I no longer play it at all. I am looking foward to the new Transformer games but I know they will be sucky. It is an ok system and has some ok games but I think the GC and XB surpass it in so many ways but that's the price ya pay for being out first. I did consider getting rid of it a few times but I won't get enough for it to want to bother and I am sure something will come out I have to have.

I love my PS2 but lately the only game I seem to be playing is World Soccer Winning Eleven 6 (which is the best soccer game of all time.)
Even if there were no good games coming out, I would have to keep my PS2 just to play that game alone.

I just picked up bunch of SNES games so the SNES has seen the most playing time by far.

I have a PS2, but if it wasn't for GTA:VC and GTA3, I would resent having bought it.

It's huge library lets some interesting games be added into the mix, like Ico, but for the genre that interests me most, multiplayer/party, it's really mediocre.

Similarly, I'd love to play Halo on the Xbox, and I recognize that it probably has the most horsepower of the current systems, but not enough interesting to make me want it. (At least they have 4 controller ports)

They also make a damn decent version of the "PalmPilot"...even their low end models have terrific 320x320 screens, and their higher end models have been pushing the envelope in terms of featues available in a tiny space.

On the other hand...I notice my PS2 has started sounding a bit louder after a lot of Half life being played...

I'll tell you the main reason I and many other people own a PS2 - RPG'S

Between the gamecube AND xbox, you'll get a TOTAL of 3-4 decent RPGS, the PS2 has a plethora of them to choose from. Dark cloud 1, 2, Final Fantasy series, Legaia, Xenosaga, and kingdom hearts among some of the better ones.

Versus - Skies of arcadia on the GC, and (?) on the xbox (I don't even really look at xbox titles, so I can't name any good RPG's, but I'm sure there are some, like morrowind)

No, that wasn't a hit on the xbox, just the truth, I don't own one, so I don't look at the games :)
