It's like everyone just HAS to have this game! It's hard to find a copy that doesn't go for less than $9. Usually, they stay low for 90% of the auction then people REALLY go after it in the last few hours. One on eBay is selling theirs (With NO box or manual. Just the Cart) for $22! And the one that was at the Game Stop was $13!

Is this game so good that people just HAVE to have it? I just HAVE to have it too. But I don't wanna go THAT far!

Like River City Ransom and Contra, its a very popular game and commands high prices. I think Kid Icarus is one of the best NES games. Its worth the money, IMO.

Kid Icarus is a great game, I would be willing to pay up to $12 for it and that's alot for me.

Sadly, with NES games it seems that quality is a huge factor in determining price. Notice you can buy some semi-rare sucky games for $10, but Kid Icarus and Metroid (both common) will cost you upwards of $15. I guess that is one of the down sides of being a NES collector.

i think that what makes being a nes collector great! people are dumb-its mostly young kids i think- and they pay tons of $ for games they like to play and remeber from growing up- they dont remember the hard to find games...so with the exception of the top few you can get really rare games for cheap...no reason to pay $10 for contra there are 5678457654636346 copies of it so you always know you can wait...
im happy that a bunch of people were prolly having a bid war on river city ransom today while i got wally bear and the no! gang for $4!!!!

Yes but they might win the auction and get a great game while you'll still have Wally Bear and the No Gang. They are getting the better end of the deal :P

Yeah but Wally Bear is a lamer and the No gang sniffs glue behind the scenes. Meanwhile, Alex is making sweet sweet love to Roxy.

I never played Kid Icarus when it was new, only years later on an emulator, and I wasn't at all impressed. It was decent, but no more than that. People always rank this as one of the NES classics, but I just don't see it. A friend of mine told me this used to be one of his favorite games, so I asked him to try it again on an emulator (he hadn't played it in years)... afterwards, he couldn't remember why he had liked the game so much.

So, did this game just not age very well? Or am I missing something that makes the game so fun?

If people want to PLAY a game like Contra or Kid Icarus then it's worth a few extra bucks.

The rarity of a game has no true bearing on price. Collectables are worth no more than what one is willing to pay for them.

The NES games are still comparatively fresh and still sell a few copies. These games sell because people want to play them. There are far fewer of us who buy 2600-era games. These are typically bought by those who wish to own them. The rarity now drives the price.

Give it 10 more years and there will be far fewer NES buyers. They will have grown up and the younger people will not hold the same nostalgic feel for those games. The few NES collectors left will of course own all the common games, so now the value will be based strictly on rarity.

I thought Kid Icarus REALLY sucked.

Fortunately I tested it by borrowing it from this kid at school. He had EVERY single NES game as soon as they came out. I could never figure out how he paid for it until i grew up a little and realized that he worked at a store which sold NES and had a loose security policy.

I bought Kid Icarus the weekend it was released back in... 1986, I think. Played it for a week, beat it, thought it was pretty decent. Then I played many, many more of the scrolling adventure games like Metroid, Adventure of Link, Battle of Olympus, Astyanax, and others, and Kid Icarus does NOT hold up when compared to other, often less well-known games of its genre.

The best parts of the game are the Eggplant Wizard and the Grim Reapettes.

So, how far into the game do I team up with Simon Belmont and Mega Man to defeat Mother Brain that Eggplant Head? ;)

WHoa! Lot of non-Icarus people out there!

I think Kid Icarus needs to be put into perspective...

1. It is a HARD game!
2. First game to use the Password system (metroid and Icarus were released on the same day)
3. created in 1986, so it is not going to look as good as other NES games, but helped to pave the way for great games.

I am probably on my own here, but I have always likes kid Icarus better than Metroid. I am very surprised the Kid Icarus has not gotten a new game for a modern system... what a rip!

its expensive due to it being an early first party Nintendo game. Donkey Kong Jr Math goes for about the same amount on Ebay, and i would play KI over that any day

I don't think Kid Icarus has aged very well, it was a unique type of platformer when it was new, but the genre has been improved upon so much that I personally find it to be frustrating to play now.

I have very fond memories of playing it back in the late 80's though.. KI's was a neat world to play in. If I plug this game in now, I usually only play for 10-15 minutes and then put it away.

Not sure if you missed it, but you eventually power up so the arrows travel the full length of the screen with fireballs rotating around it to boot :)
