I don't have a manual for my only copy of "Mr. Do!" for the 8-bits, and am curious about the storyline. Can anyone tell me why there's a clown collecting fruit underground in this game?

I've wondered that myself. I've also wondered why in the Colecovision version (which I LOVE) Mr. Do looks like a Klansman. He's all white like CV's Popeye.

Here's the 2600 description but it's not much help:

GAME DESCRIPTION

Guide Mr. Do as he tries to harvest his orchard before the evil Badguys can catch him. Quick! Mow a path to the cherries and start picking! But watch out - here comes a Badguy! Throw your Power Ball to squelch him. But another one is on the way, so run until your Power Ball comes back.
You're not completely defenseless, though. You can push apples on top
of the Badguys to quash their pursuit. Sometimes when you're not looking, a Badguy changes into an Alphamonster. Don't let it near Mr. Do! Eliminate all five Alphamonsters to spell E-X-T-R-A and win an extra Mr. Do!

I don't think there ever were coherent story lines for these games. As I remember the story for Mr. Do's! Castle was that he had simply inherited a castle that was infested with unicorns (oh that makes sense).

Of course it makes sense.

Have you ever seen what unicorns do if you let them stay in a castle?
It's DISGUSTING!

Those things are supposed to be unicorns? God, talk about graphic limitations! I always thought the monsters were frogs or trolls.

I'm not sure I even want to know what the storyline is in Neo Mr. Do... all the gender changing and crazy crap in that game just blows my mind.

Mr. Do! on NeoGeo. They mucked about with the classic formula and as a result, for any true Mr. Do! fan, it stunk.

I dunno, maybe I'm just a traditionalist. I just thought they kinda mucked around with it too much on NeoGeo and it just looked too ... I dunno. Modern.
