This week the MegaManFan and I were getting stupid with some classic gaming. After experiencing the thrill that is Cheetahmen 2 we needed some Contra to recover and got onto a real NES.

So Red Falcon was killed once again thanks to the Konami code. As long as I live I will be able to remember that code. If I'm 98 years old with Alzheimers and a brain eaten away by neuro-maggots I will still be able to tap it out.

Everyone who was a teenaged boy in the 80s will know the code forever.

And yet I forgot half of what I learned in college.

It's amazing the stuff you remember. I played NES Punchout for the first time in what must've been about 10 years and wanted to try fighting Tyson again to see if I could still beat him. I couldn't remember the code offhand but once I started playing with the number entry, it hit me like I never left: 007-373-5963 :o

btw.. I lost in about 15 seconds

Beating Tyson's butt in front of a crowd at Wal-Mart will always stick in my mind as a great memory. I too remember both codes vividly (and oddly enough, the last 4 digits were the last 4 numbers in the phone number of the game place I used to work at!). I can still lay a beating on Tyson to this day, since I used to practice against him SOOO damn much. Lol.

And remember in... Lifeforce I think it ws, that if you put the code in, it BLEW UP your ship? The code was so well known that they changed it. :D

It did that in Gradius 3, too.
If you used the shoulder buttons on the SNES pad instead of the d-pad, though, it powered you up.

I know it works in Contra (thank god, or I never would have finished it) It also works in Gradius too I think.
As mentioned there are variations that work in other titles as well.

I seem to remember a Castlevania game where if you paused it and put in the code, it would refill your life.

Because I never had to USE it.

I wasn't a Konami kid. I didn't really get any Konami games.

Wasn't it also in one of the Turtles games?

I never was good at remembering codes..LOL.

Konami made some of the most awesome games of the 80's though. I thik Metal Gear (under the Ultra label) was one of their all time best.

The MSX version is better.

The MSX version may be better but it's not like I can go to a thrift store and pick up a MSX..cuz I can't.

So the NES version of Metal Gear is the best to me.

LOL.

I don't think so...in Life Force you did the code on the title screen and got extra lives. Alot of them.

29, to be precise.

If you want Contra LOVE, play Gryzor (english patched if possible). You'll be screaming FUCK YOU KONAMI for the rest of your life. It's Contra +++.

The Konami code...

...gives you 30 lives in Life Force and Contra...

... powers up your ship in Gradius, if entered when paused....

... gives you 10 lives in Super C...

... KILLS you in Gradius 3 (As mentioned before, swap left/right with L button, R button and it works, but only once per level, I think)

... gives you 30 lives in Gyruss if entered BACKWARDS!

It does something in Jackal, too, but I forget what. Now THERE'S an underrated classic.

:D
