I have raised about $90 and was wanting a classic gaming system, and I was wondering which one to get, so can you help? I was leaning toward an atari system, but you could post any system. I want a good system that I can collect for, and have good games to play. (I play more than I collect, though, I will also collect.)

Thanks
The Vanman

$90 will get you almost any of the classic ssyetems and a couple of games. I would say get an Atari 2600. It has a ton of games, many of them are really outstanding. The common carts are cheap and fun to play. There are "collector" carts that gor for incredible amounts of monmey but you can collect and have fun for this system pretty cheaply.

If you want something a little newer, check out the Nintendo Entertainment System. It's got thousands of games, many of which cost next to nothing and it's got some of the best video games ever made in my opinion. The units can be a little troublesome at times, but it's not that hard to get them working. Carts for it are also common as dirt. You'll regularly find them at garage sales, thrift stores, etc.

Enjoy and let us know what you decide on.

If you're looking at getting an Atari 2600, I'd recommend an Atari 7800 instead... it plays (almost) all of the 2600's games, plus has its own games that are closer to the NES in terms of graphics and complexity. And they're all readily available on eBay...

That said, ONLY get the 7800 if you're really interested in the 2600 games. If you just want mid- to late-'80s stuff, DEFINITELY get the NES instead.

Good call, Room 34. If you can get a 7800, you get the bonus of playing it's games as well. I unfortunately don't have a 7800 yet so I didn't even think to suggest it.

If you're looking for an Atari then the 7800 is a good choice, just like the others have said. Built like a tank and will last forever.

But instead of a NES I'd recommend an SNES. I've had much fewer problems with my SNES and carts than I do with the NES. Plus, in my opinion, there are more and better games for the SNES than the NES.

Just my opinions.

The SNES is great system, in fact it's probably in my top 5 favs of all time. The carts are more expensive then NES carts and not as easy to find which makes it harder to collect for.

It is built much better and less tempermenatl then a NES though

Depends on what you like really... what do you consider classic? If you think Asteroids and Combat are classics, then by all means, go for the 2600/7800. If you think Super Mario Bros and Megaman are classics, then go for the NES.

Keep in mind that if you go with the Atari, most of the games will seem quite primitive compared to most systems. I don't know if graphics and such are important to you, but the games on the NES are a lot more advanced.

Well, personally, I'd suggest you go with the NES. Just get a cleaning kit while you're at it, since you're gonna have to keep those connectors like new if you want to get the most out of things. But you're gonna be getting some of the greatest games to ever see the light of day with the NES. The Mega Man games, the original Metal Gear, the Mario games, some great old role-playing games like the original Final Fantasy and the Dragon Warrior games. Zelda 1 and 2. You can't go wrong with an NES really.

I really consider atari and cocelo classics, not really the NES. I am leaning toward an atari, but I have heard things about cocelo and stuff, so i am really not sure. You all can post stuff that is not related to atari.

I know the games and graphics are primitive, but I still like it. I bought the "Activision Anthology" for Ps2 when it first came out ($40 and I am kicking myself because the price dropped to like $20 two weeks later) , and play it more than my other games. I laugh at myself for playing atari 2600 games on a Next gen system. So, as you can see graphics dont matter, it is gameplay.

If it's between Coleco and Atari, then I would suggest that you get a Colecovision WITH the 2600 adapter! Then you can play games for both systems!

Then get a Colecovision with the 2600 adapter. That's always been my favorite combo. CV carts aren't as common in the wild but many of them are excellent. It's got good arcade ports and a lot of games only available on the CV such as: 2010, Evolution, Tarzan, Destructor, Victory, Squish'Em and bunch of others. The CV is also fun becuase of the variety of controllers and stuff. Super Action Sticks, 2600 exapansion, Roller Controller - all good stuff.
