I just got my hands on a power pc / performa. Not too shabby and the 603e running at 120mhz is pretty damn impressive. Alot to be said for RISC processors i spose.

My question is what are people favourite titles for a mac of this vintage? I love FPS's and know about marathon but am unfamiliar with all other genres for the apple mac.

Oh, it's modem was replaced with a ethernet so no net yet. Can someone guide me in the direction of creating hybrid cd's on the pc? remembering that the machines are not linked.

Has news and on the right side of the screen there is an area called mac download files. This is constantly updated with programs (shareware, freeware, and demos)

As for a hybrid CD, I don't think you have to bother. I think you can download the programs onto your PC and burn them like a regular disc. Your mac should be able to do this. I have burned roms, and mp3's from my windows and moved them over to my mac with no problems.

P.S. As for great games check out ambrosia software's escape velocity series, their bubble trouble game, actually any game they made is great

Ahh, thanks for that.

The cdrom on the mac wont read my CDRW's. So hybrid cd's are really for business or software built for both platforms on the same cd, Like warcraft 2.

Ive worked on a mac for a while but never played the games.

then don't use cdrw's, use regular cdr's, they work fine on my 6115 MacPPC after burning them on my PC (it's my first mac, picked the whole system up for $15 at a Goodwill! )

Its the performa 6300 power pc which is the asian version of the performa 6320 cd. So its at 120mhz with a 603e cpu. I am surprised at the speed it runs at. The OS needs updating as its only 7.5.1, ive installed the appletalk protocol on win 2000 and an ethernet adapter. For this to operate i think i need 7.6 as a minimum.

Do a Google search for the words 'abandonware' and 'Mac'. You should find some games that'll run on your machine.

If you know of a place that sells older Mac games, try Dark Forces, Quake 1, Zone Raiders, Carmageddon, Prime Target, Damage Incorporated, Havoc, Pro Pinball, Shadow Wraith, and Duke Nukem 3D. I've come across several of these over the past couple of years. In fact, there's a store across town that has loads of Duke Nukems for $3 each. When you're looking for used software in thrift stores and such, always keep your eye out for the red "Accelerated for Power Macintosh" logo.

Hey ppl, thanks for the tips and links. Seems the previous owner had an OS older then the machine running on it (7.5.1), So i got stuffit today on CD from a thrift store and ,y burns work NP.

Currently running and impressed with,

Another world
Quake
Duke3d
Price of persia
Marathon 1 & 2

Never really disliked macs & have found there is plenty of gaming goodness.

System 7.5.1 is the original system software for the Performa 6320CD. It is not older than the machine.

"Another World"? Is this "Out of this World" re-titled?

Also, you might want to check your machine's VRAM, and probably upgrade it. The 1mb built-in only supports 8-bit color at resolutions above 640x480.

I dont own a 6320cd, I own the asian version released a year later,,, 7.5.1 is almost 12 months earlier. Which is called a performa 6300 power pc

I meen another world, It is in french so go figure or google or ask me to mail u the SIT file.

The vram can only be updated with a PDS card that is hard to come by. I dont give a toss about RES with the 15 inch monitor.

I ask because, outside the U.S.A., "Out of this World" is generally titled "Another World". I was only curious to know if this alternate title name was released as a Mac version.

All of Ambrosia's games from that era are really good (as are their newer ones... Deimos Rising is my favorite!)... A lot of their earlier games are perfect for a computer of the caliber being discussed here, and they have great appeal for classic gamers too, as many are updates of the classics!

Maelstrom = Asteroids
Apeiron = Centipede
Barrack = Qix
Mars Rising (and Deimos Rising) = Xevious
Bubble Trouble = Pengo
Swoop = Galaxian

All are EXCELLENT and come highly recommended. Plus, they're all fully-functional shareware, so it's a great way to get started for cheap... although I will warn you: Ambrosia games are the only shareware I've ever actually paid for. You will like them so much, you'll WANT to pay for them!

Is that because of the soap opera "Another World"? I used to have the Mac version of "Out of this World." Lame. I hate games that have such a rigid storyline.

That reminds me... another great old Mac game was a Battlezone-esque vector-based first-person tank shooter... its name slips my mind right now. Anyone?

I never thought of the soap opera...you're probably right.

As for Out of this World... I guess it wasn't awful. It just wasn't what I expected. There was some step fairly early in the game that I had a lot of trouble getting past (a jump across a knocked-out bridge or something) and I eventually gave up because it didn't seem worth it. (Besides I was too busy playing Might & Magic II for 23 hours a day at the time. And Maelstrom for 58 minutes of the remaining hour.)

Here are my personal favorites as enjoyed on a Performa 6116CD (60MHz) I've owned (and still own) since 1996:

LucasArts: X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Full Throttle, The Dig, Day of the Tentacle, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

Blizzard: Warcraft 2 and Diablo.

Infogrames: Alone in the Dark Trilogy (3 CD set, #3 is my favorite).

Ambrosia: just about anything they make. My two favorites are Escape Velocity and Harry the Handsome Executive.

Misc: A-10 Attack! (incl. Cuba missions) and Flashback.

Other Shareware: Tetris Max (also known as 'Bricklayer'), Arashi (very nice Tempest clone), Glypha III (Joust clone), and Spectre Challenger just to name a few.

I had forgotten about Tetris Max and Arashi... I loved those! There also used to be a pixel-perfect port of Japanese Pac-Man (Puckman) with the Japanese ghost names and all!

There was something about Glypha's graphics that I never quite liked. But then Williams released official emulators for Joust, Defender, and Robotron: 2084, so it didn't matter anyway.

One thing cool with some of those old games, Tetris Max in particular... it was super-easy to modify sounds in the games with ResEdit. I hacked Tetris Max so it played loops from a couple of my favorite crazy prog rock bands! (Magma and Zamla Mammaz Manna, for those who may be curious.)

I also hacked the old Mac version of Monopoly to use Simpsons sounds. A few were brilliant: When you landed on "Go to Jail" Bart said "I didn't do it" and then Mr. Burns said "Bring him to me!"
