Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. But , how exactly does piracy bump up sales? And if you mean what I think, why would either M$ or Sony want to sell their machines to pirates, who have no intention of buying a game, when they already take a loss on the hardware?

Please, before we go down this path of Atari wreaking some sort of vengeance upon Nintendo, let's remember that the Atari that exists today has NOTHING to do with the old Atari whatsoever, except for acquiring rights to the name and bastardizing the Fuji logo.

I know that perfectly well, I was just speaking metaphorically. Actually, though, there are some Infogrames big-wigs that are old Atari fans, which is one of the reasons why they picked the rights and changed their name to Atari, aside from the fact that they felt Atari was a better known name than Infogrames. So in a weird sort of way, they may be, as a smaller reason for not making GC games, exacting some revenge for past crimes against an old favorite company of theirs...that's more what I meant. Obviously I'm reading into things somewhat, I have no proof, but it is true about some old Atari fans in the upper ranks of Infogrames. When it comes right down to it, I know, as do most here that it is about profits vs. development costs and keeping investors happy, that's 99% of the reason for everything companies do, 1% may be for other reasons.

Well, I'm a big Atari fan... and I think Infogrames is the f***ing stupidest name in the history of software companies. Does that mean I deserve to start calling myself Atari? (Oh yeah... I didn't buy the rights to the name.)

If there's no real connection to the old company, then it's not "really" Atari. Even if the people in the company LIKED Atari when it was around.

I agree that infogrames was a stupid name, which is why it's a good thing that they decided to change their name to Atari, at least it's a cool name with history. But I'm not sure I get what you're trying to say about changing you're name to Atari because you're a fan...are you saying you think you're name is "f***ing" stupid too?

Ha... twisting my words around against me. A shrewd argument!

Whatever... I am just being silly now.

My point is merely that what was Infogrames is now Atari ONLY because they bought the rights to the name, and someone finally figured out that Atari was a better name than Infogrames. There is NO real connection to the Atari of old... and being FANS of that long-dead Atari doesn't count. :P

Thank God.

The Atari corporation was a mismanaged mess that deserved to go bankrupt. I think Infogrames is a better company than the actual Atari was from 1980-95. Maybe Infogrames can recover the reputation that Atari so stupidly destroyed.

Well, you do have a good point.

I am trying to pinpoint the moment when Atari first went astray and, well... it just goes back and back and back. I am having a crisis right now... I am suddenly realizing this company I have loved all my life was nothing but a mismanaged dungheap from the very beginning! :o :ponder: :woozy:

Ehh... but there have been worse. Sure, Atari made a bunch of stupid mistakes and was messed up more often than not, but they DID have a moment when they were the undisputed KINGS of the video game universe. I don't see that ever happening to Infogrames... even if they are called "Atari"!

Please, someone... PLEASE just explain to me what that name is supposed to mean, anyway! Or more specifically, why the "r"? For the love of God, WHY THE "R"????

I remember the first time I read the name. I thought "Infogames. Neat name".. then I noticed the "R" and all I could think was, "What the... FUCK is a 'Grame'?"

I think it was a Typo when they started the company and they were too embarrased to admit it, so they kept it. ;)

Atari was good when Nolan Bushnell owned it in the 1970's. Atari went to crap around 1980 when they suddenly became rich..... it was as though they couldn't handle their own success (like people winning the lottery and then going bankrupt 5 years later).

.

Info-grames probably derives their name from tele-grames. Tele-grames were messages transmitted over a distance. Info-grames are the same thing, but designed to by informative/educational. (Yes, I do think games are educational. They teach logical & critical thinking skills.)

Are they actually called "tele-grames" somewhere? Here in the U.S. we refer to them as "telegrams"... no extra "e".

Or maybe it's the fact that they're a French company, and while "Infogames" has no meaning in French (if anything it would have had to be "Infojeux"), "Infogrames" (pronounced "Info grahm") does (it's a made up word like Microsoft, but made up of two French word fragments, not two English word fragments.)

Atari probably decided that the Gamecube has not been as successful as everyone would have liked and decided to go with the numbers which favor the PS2 and the Xbox. Wheter or not the time not taken in creating content for the gamecube will result in better software for the PS2 or Xbox is one of pure speculation.

I REALLY hate the look of "Atari's" current logo.

HATE it.

Ick.

That little swoop at the bottom of the middle bar looks like shit. They ruined a perfectly good logo. I hate it.
