Thanks to an incredibly nice local AA user who needed to clear out some storage space (you know who you are bud, and you rock - I can't thank you enough) I got a complete in the box TG-16 and a half dozen games (not to mention the pack-in) for a very reasonable price. I just fired it up and started playing Keith Courage, and now I'm hooked. The question is, what other games should I get? I know about Alien Crush and Y's Book's 1 + 2, but what all should I look for? Here's what I have so far:

* Bonk's Adventure
* Keith Courage in Alpha Zones
* Splatterhouse
* Takin' it to the Hoop
* TV Sports Football
* Vigilante
* World Class Baseball

I also have the Turbo Tap and an extra controller, so multi-player games are not a problem. I know there's a CD drive, but should I invest in it and if so how reliable is the drive going to be before I run into trouble, and are the CD based games worth it? Also I've heard that PC Engine games will work on the TG-16 without an adapter. True or false?

You will need an adapter to play PC Engine games on the TG-16. My favorite game for the system is Devil's Crush. It is my favorite Pinball game for any system. The TG-16 version of Raiden is also pretty good. If you like portable gaming, I would recommend picking up a Turbo Express.

Oh yeah that's right, Camp California. So how much are those devices gonna run me?

Forgot about Galaga '90. That's the only home port of Galaga '88 right? Man I'm going to eBay for one RIGHT NOW. :D

What's your game CPUWiz? :)

MMFan.. here are the typical recommendations for a basic tg-16 setup

DEVILS CRUSH: This pinball game is the bomb yo. You can check out Alien Crush too, but it aint as fun imho

BLAZING LAZERS - The original game that blew my mind on the tg-16! Still a great shooter with lots of levels, and indicative of what made the system great. :D Other notables on this Gunhed type of fast schmups are Soldier Blade and Super Star Soldier

MILITARY MADNESS: Like Advance Wars? Then this game is right up there in that genre. Highly addicting strategy. The guide in the game is great as well so you don't really need a manual.

Aero Blasters: Forget the Genesis version of this game (Air Busters). THIS is one fast sidescrolling shootemup with plenty of action. Hard, but good if you like dem schmups :)

Galaga ‘90: nuff said

Air Zonk: Zany Shooter. Tg-16 was a great schmup box

Legendary Axe: Notable for being one of the platformers that blew everyones mind on the U.S. release. Still kind of holds up. The end boss is pretty neat looking.

Ninja Spirit: Ninja action at it's finest! Kind of easy though. Still very worthy.

Neutopia: The tg-16's Zelda rip. somewhat fun

Dungeon Explorer: use it with the multitap. This game had a GREAT secret that I found accidentally while messing with the invincibility code. Basically you do it, go to the throne and you'll get an "alternate ending" that talks about getting ch1x :P

Others of note:
Splatterhouse
Bomberman ‘93
Dead Moon
Dragon’s Curse
Legendary Axe II
Magical Chase
Parasol Stars

The TG 16 is my all time favorite system. The thing just kicks ass. Technically, you only need an adapter to play import HuCards, any region CD games work in any system. You do need the System 3.0 card to play Super CDs. And then there's the Arcade card, System 1 card, blah, blah, blah...but we'll skip that for now :D I would recommend getting the CD attatchment or a Turbo Duo because there are way too many kick ass games on disc. Damn, I'd say get every game for it mainly because I can't think of too many sucky ones. A good CD setup should be around $50 if you decide to get one and I will say, it's worth it :)

They have adapters for imports and a few new games and some nice accessories.

I love my TG16 too. I would definetely suggest Military Madness and Neutopia.

I've been playing Neutopia constantly lately, I can't beat the 7th boss so I'm stuck :x

So I see these posts about 2.0 amd 3.0 system cards, and I have to ask:

1. Do they plug into the expansion port, or somewhere else?
2. Do they do different functions, or do the later numbers include the features of the earlier numbers?
3. Are they pricey?

The system cards go in the HuCard slot when you have the CD unit attached. You should get a System 2 card with a TGCD, but the DUO has System 3 built in. An arcade card can also be purchased for the DUO or TGCD but are few Arcade card games.

I envy you right now, you've got a fun discovery period to go through with the TG. I love this system and it is possibly my favourite system as well.

Try to avoid the sports games though as most of them are pretty crappy.

Recommended:

Bonk's Revenge
Air Zonk
Neutopia I & II
Galaga 90
Super Star Soldier

Dungeon Explorer
Bomberman (and '93)

I don't know, I'd have to check. I know I do have an extra copy of Shape Shifter, that's for sure.

Not recently.. but I bought mine (boxed) for $10CDN years ago.

Actually, now that I remember it, the store was asking $10CDN and I offered 2 loose games for it.. China Warrior and Keith Courage..

So, to be fair, I should offer mine to the first person who can come up with a similar offer.. BUT I WON'T!!! :evil:

I remember the Video Game Bible has a chapter on TG-16 now, I'll have to read it to get up to speed on this stuff a bit. But it sounds like what I've read and what I'm hearing is that if I had gotten a Turbo Duo I wouldn't have to worry about cards or add-ons (it's the unit and CD in one I take it) and since I have a regular TG-16 it may be a royal P.I.T.A. to get it to play everything.

The TurboDuo ALSO has a RAM expansion built-in that has to be added seperately to the TG-16.

And I think it has built-in AV ports, too. It may be a stupid all-in-one connector, though. Either way, yet another plus.

On the upside, you've got more TG16/PCEngine than me.

Of course. But then again, my entire TG-16/PCE card library was bought during the tg-16 heyday (if there ever was a term :lol:). Luckily I was still doing my yearly Japan vacations at the time as well so my converter got a lot of use as well. :D

Anyway, once the system 'died', my shopping for it pretty much died as well. Onwards and upwards I always say! :D (to the PSX/N64/Saturn!)

is that game rare or something? ive played some pc engine via emulation and i found that hani in the sky and hani on the road are both VERY weird. But then again, this is the system iwth toilet kids and gokuraku chuka taisen (you shoot ramen and soba noodles and fat men in suits with angel wings?? ) :D
