Just a little rambling here.

At hte GS today, I noticed they have a bunch of PSX's (Not the new digital hub, obviously.) and some have that serial port.

Some don't have the port.

And they have finally started carrying used PSOne's.

I'm thinking I should collect all three.

Eventually. I don't mean now. That'd be $100 for a bunch of the same systems. I mean in the future.

Tell me something about the Serial port. I know it was originally used by the GameShark, but Sony never used it so they dropped it later on.

Does that port have any advantages?

Also, is it recommended to get a used PSOne over a new one? I know it's only a $10 difference. And what took them so long to start selling them?

End rambling.

The original Playstation had two ports that were removed.. the Parallel Port (the big port blocked by a little removable door) and the Serial Port

The Parallel Port was used by the original GameShark/Action Replay, the Game Hunter (a GB player device), and an MPEG-1 decoder for playing VideoCDs.. all of these are third-party items you can keep an eye out for. I can't think of any "official Sony" items that use the Parallel Port.

The Serial Port on the other hand was for hooking up two PlayStations for certain 2player games.. like Diablo. Software support for the option wasn't that great (read: not many games used it).. cables are rare as well.

Sorry, I meant Parallel the first time. I forgot about the Serial Link port.

Also, the first Playstations had audio l/r out sockets. These were removed after the first year. Shame really, very useful, though these models did have a tendency to overheat and skip (psu right by the laser- duh!)

If it's only a $10 difference, then just get one new. The PSone is certainly more durable than the old PSX, but still, who knows what some punk kid put that thing through?

Lik Sang has some goofy stuff that fits into the parallel port, such as the Emulator Z, GoldFinger, PSX-Amp, MP3 Station, VCD Movie Card, and so on... Most of these are goofy, unliscenced things that you can do without... but if I ever go out and get a PSX, I'd definitely try to get one with a parallel port if possible (Besides, I like the old-school look better than the PSOne).

PSX PSU's run down the entire fucking side of the systems, just like Dreamcast. The proximity to the fucking laser assembly is the same in nearly every model. They don't even get that hot!

Quite a few PSX games supported the link cable. All three Armored Cores, and a smattering of racing games not limited to at least the last two WipEout games, but the third WipEout required you to put in a code to enable link mode. WTF?

And the original japanese models had built-in S-video ports.

There's something like a dozen diffrent models of PS1, most of which have no cosmetic diffrence.

1001 is not worth having
5501 is not much better
7xx1 series is where you want to be...i would not even bother with the others, way way way too many PS's in existance for them to ever be worth anything...get a 7x series and be done with it.

Does the 7x have the Parallel port and where do you find the number?

As I recall, yes.

The model#'s on the sticker on the bottom of the deck. SCPH-xxxx.
