OK, I am sure many of you have heard me spout off against "modern" consoles. But I have to admit the new $99 price on the GameCube is tempting. I've been checking out the GC games that are out there and I have to say they look a lot more appealing to my "vintage gamer" eye than most of the repetitive hyper-realistic crap I'm seeing for PS2 and XBOX. So, I just may get myself a GameCube.

Now then, IF I were to do this, what would you say are the top 5 must-have games for GC?

Thanks!

I'd say if you are into classic games, don't want to spend a lot and don't like flashy modern games, get the PS One for even less because they have a large amount of classic arcade games collections. That can also be had for a reasonable price.

If you want "vintage to modern" then go with..

* F-Zero GX
* Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
* Metroid Prime
* StarFox Adventures
* Super Smash Bros. Melee

Or if you want the "new classics" that are the shiznit, then go with..

* Ikaruga
* Pikmin
* Soul Calibur II
* Super Monkey Ball
* Wario World

Nah, but see I DO want to experience the modern games... just the kinds of modern games that would appeal to a twitchy 2600 lover like me.

I almost bought a PSone last year, until I realized the ONLY games I was interested in were the classic arcade games. And then I realized I could already play those games for free in MAME.*

(*Not that I support that activity, of course. :P )

Overlapping repsonses... my last post was directed at sku_u's post.

Thanks for the tips, MMF. I think you can sense where I'm coming from. I haven't looked at THAT many games for the GC yet, but Wario World was the one, out of the few that I saw, that made me think that MAYBE it was worth checking out...

In case I never clarified my position on MAME..

It's for arcade games that are either not available in emulation, or not WELL emulated.

If you want a twitch game, Ikaruga definitely fits the bill. Super Monkey Ball is a modern twist on classic twitch too.

I only own seven but here they are :

FIFA SOCCER 2002 - not a big sports game fan but very fun nevertheless
SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE - it' not quite Super Mario 64 Vol. 2 but still definitely worth picking up
NAMCO MUSEUM - well, duh!
SUPER MONKEY BALL - I'll probably get around to getting pt.2 at some point as well. Fun game and not completly unlike Atari games, either, if you think about it
SIMPSONS ROAD RAGE - funnier than Crazy Taxi
STAR WARS ROGUE LEADER - it's Star Wars, duh!
STAR WARS REBEL STRIKE PREVIEW DISC - I got it for the version of the Star Wars Arcade Game that's included on it but I'll probably end up buying the full game that I put on reserve as well.

Plus, the real reason to get a GameCube is for the GameBoy Player! Who else thinks that once the price drop goes through that there'll be a $139 bundle package availible?

"Dig Dug Arrangement" is really superb. On the other hand, I really prefer the GBA version of "Pac-Man Arrangement" to the GameCube one. The screen's just too squished on the Cube version to comfortably see. Maybe if you have a really big screen TV it would be OK but it's pretty tiny on my 27".

Great minds think alike, I guess. :D

Honestly, when people say the Cube is failing, this is where and why I disagree. I'm +far+ from a kid at 29, but yet there's no system I own right now sans for retro consoles I have more fun playing. So what if it doesn't play DVD's? It +does+ play Gameboy Advance games. I think that's a more than fair tradeoff. :)

Now see, THAT kind of sports game I could enjoy.

I guess I just don't like the super-realistic games, no matter what the genre, because I get enough reality in... REALITY! Video games are an inherently escapist activity so I want them to be as UN-realistic as possible.

If only five, then I recommend:

Resident Evil
Resident Evil Zero
Medal Of Honor
Super Monkey Ball
Metroid

And make sure you save up your money for SW: Rogue Leader III. I have a feeling that Double Dash is gonna be good too.

Well, the Cube games didn't impress this 2600 lover very much. Here's what I *did* enjoy:
- Eternal Darkness (great story that will give you nightmares!)
- Metroid Prime (makes you feel that you're actually exploring an alien planet!)
- Super Monkey Ball (Marble Madness in 3D!)
- Ikaruga (a shooter)
- Soul Calibur 2 (do I really need to explain?)

Well that's about it. I did not enjoy the Cube games very much. The sequels were not very good IMHO. Mario sunshine was boring. Mario 64 was fun. Wind Waker was boring. Ocarina of Time was challenging and fun to explore. And so on. Nintendo screwed up the classics by forgetting to make them FUN (a terrible sin).

.

ASIDE: Why do the classic arcade collections only include 5-6 games? Why not put 100 per disk and make them worth purchasing?

I agree with MegaManFan on Ikaruga and Monkey Ball. Here's a brief review of each game:

Ikaruga is one of the most intense and innovative shooters ever. There are only 5 levels, but you definitely won't beat the game on your first play. You start with only 3 continues (with 3 lives each so that's 9 lives), but you get an extra continue for every hour you play the game. The game is real hard. Description of how the game works: Enemies are either black or white. Black enemies fire black bullets, and white enemies fire white bullets. You can change your own ship color between black and white with the press of a button. When your ship is white, you'll absorb white bullets, and vice versa. Also, when you're white you shoot white bullets which deal double damage to black enemies; and if you destroy a white enemy with white bullets, they'll explode into a barrage of white bullets. The emphasis of the game is on score. When you destroy 3 enemies of the same color in a row, you get a chain bonus. If you keep getting chain bonuses in a row, your bonus gets higher and higher until it maxes out, and then you get the max bonus for each consecutive chain you destroy. If you mess up at all, say, kill 3 white enemies (chain bonus), 2 black enemies, and a white enemy, your bonus resets back to zero. Sounds complicated? You'll get the hang of it.

Monkey Ball is like the Labyrinth game where you tilt the marble through the maze. You have a time limit for each stage to make it more harrowing. The later levels will test your twitch-gaming skill to its limit! It's a great arcade game, but has several great mini-games as well.

I'd also like to say Metriod Prime, because it's just so awesome.

Um, and for the last two games, Super Smash Bros. Melee is one of the best games on the system IMO. It's also a blast multiplayer, but it's still very good even if you only play single player.

And the 5th game is either...

Rogue Sqaudron if you like Star Wars and flight-shooters. It's a real solid game.

Animal Crossing if you want a cute little niche game in the style of Harvest Moon. This game is great if you like interior design and collecting stuff.

Legend of Zelda Wind Waker if you want another epic adventure, although it IS pretty easy asside from a couple good puzzles.

Mario Sunshine if you're hurting for a good 3D platformer. A lot of people say they don't like this game very much, but it's still a very solid Mario-esque platformer.

That's what I've been saying for years! I am so sick of Pac-Man and Galaga compilations that I want to puke!

A copy of Freeloader and Star Soldier and Winning Eleven 6: FE from Japan :D

AND then...

Heheheh... I'm a closet Animal Crossing player myself. I have traded items with people over the net and its fun to try and collect an entire series of things.

But the best part of Animal Crossing is the NES games you collect. Being able to play the original Zelda or Wario's Woods or Punch Out or Super Mario Bros. is GREAT!!

Just don't tell any Quake or Wolfenstein players that you like Animal Crossing :roll:

I think that's why G-Phouria nominated it for "Best Guilty Pleasure." And if it really is a "player's choice" title now I'm going to indulge myself in just that pleasure. :D
