Can the xbox be modded to play game cube games?

I have been reading this forum for the last week or two and you guys have convinced me to get an xbox. now all I need to know is whether or not I need to keep my gc.

Thanks in advance,

Allen

btw, I really like the forum

I doubt it would be worth it. With GCs coming down to $99, I can't imagine any hardware/software combo to mod an Xbox would be cheaper, let alone even possible. They are 2 very different pieces of hardware.

Keep your GC and when the Xbox drops in price again around Xmas, try to snag one.

Wow, that would be one impossible project. Just starting with the discs, the GC ones are smaller size, spin in the other direction, and read data the opposite direction (middle to edge versus edge to middle) from the Xbox.

Just stop and THINK for a second, and you'll know the answer.

--- To emulate an N64 at 100% speed, you need at least 1000 MHz PC. The N64 is only running at ~75 MHz.

--- The GameCube runs at 450 MHz. So you'd need a PC that runs at least 5000 MHz for proper emulation... probably more.

--- So, given that thought analysis, how the hell would a ~750 MHz Celeron Xbox emulate GC games? No. Way. Ever.

Now for something I know is possible

How would I go about putting in a bigger hard drive? I know I would need to copy everything from the original drive to the new drive, I found a hard drive duplicator at www.logicube.com/products/hd_duplication/echo.asp to do this but at $515 there has to be a cheaper way.

Mod chips for emulation and saving stuff (games and DVDs) to the hard drive, which one do you recomend? chips under $50 would be preferable but if thats not possible I understand.

oh ya, I am hopeing to get an xbox for christmass so I am planing ahead.
if I already had a xbox I would have noticed the obvious differences mentioned ;)

Thanks again,

Allen

:D Ya I think I will practice on old PC HDs before I try the real thing

I guess the only thing I can do to practice for a mod chip is to work on my soldering skills.
If you mean that I should make my own mod chip, well lets just say that I don't need any green-jewled paper weights :ponder:

www.modchipman.com mods your xbox for you (modchip + install) for 50 bucks and the turnaround time is very quick. I've had 3 friends go to him, all with excellent results. harddrives can also be installed and of course there are also pre-mods available as an all-in one package if you don't want to deal with buying one and sending it there. Just passing along info :)

Myth.

The 'Cube uses standard DVD-ROM drives.

Simple test to prove direction of spin: Open your 'Cube up while it's spinning a disk and watch it spin back down.
It's going the same direction as every other disk-based media.

Another commonly circulated myth is the data is spiralled tighter ona 'Cube disk.

It's all in the data format. Nintendo has a disk format that ... "upsets" most other devices.
If the commonly alleged copy protection schemes were true, your PC would give you a bad disk error of some sort.
But instead, it locks untill the disk is removed.

It's just malicious code. Nothing more special than when the record comapnies made a CD that crashed PCs when it was inserted into the CD-ROM drive(and re-flashed the BIOS on Macs) by including a track of malicious data(that could be seen by the human eye and blocked with a Sharpie marker, returning the disk to redbook standard(and making Sharpies illegal under the DMCA too, but that's a whole 'nother rant)).

I thought about that but I am more interested in the games and online play of the xbox, the emus are just a nice free bonus (well the cost of the mod chip)

To be able to sell off a system, the GC is good but it would be nice to have a "universal" system.

NE146- thanks for the link to mochip man, the Premodded 2.2 Lite XBOX w/ THE WORKS! or the Premodded 2.2 Pro XBOX w/ THE WORKS! sounds like a good deal for me.

The 'Cube uses standard DVD-ROM drives.

so GC on XB may technically be possible except for the processor

Pretty much.
RCmodler grossly simplified things.
CPU, video chipset, sound chipset, input, EVERYTHING has to be emulated.
Personally, I bet at least 8GHz.
This will probably be as grossly wrong as people predicting SegaCD emulation would take a 2GHz machine, but...

The first steps have been taken.
Allegedly, the emulator Dolphin can actually run commerical games now.

In wireframe.

At 1-2 FPS.

But still...

Pretty much you won't see Dreamcast, PS2, or GC emulation on the Xbox ever. Other than those, everything else can/has been done.

The Xbox chip is no where near 1000 mhz and I play 1080, mario 64, and others very well on my Xbox.

Also it's possible to "upgrade" your xbox as well opening up all sorts of future emulation possibilities.1.4 MHz Xbox

Will you be playing Metroid Prime soon on your Xbox? No. But the game blows ass anyway. Maybe we'll be able to play Zelda WW though. :)

1.4Mhz eh? :) That thing would have trouble emulating pong.

When talking about clock speed, you have to stop comparing the Xbox with the PC. Xbox doesn't run windows etc in the background which makes a big difference.

Still won't emulate a Cube or PS2 though.
