One of my friends would like to know if there is something that allows him to hook up his Atari and NES and stuff to his computer monitor. Could you give me any links to websites or anything like that that would sell this sort of device? Thanx

Yeah...a TV tuner box would work. Like this one:

There's probably something cheaper out there tho.

You could always get a TV Tuner card for your computer, and you'd be able to do stuff like play video games in a window, watch TV on your desktop, and record TV shows onto your hard drive... Here's a fairly cheap one and here's a much better one.

Are there any that will give your computer output to a TV, split into red yellow and white RCA? For example let's say I want to play MAME games or use my computer on the HDTV.

Most video-cards these days already have video out and the audio you can just connect directly to the sound card. So all you need is a couple of cables. :)

Every computer I've ever bought has only had output to a computer monitor, although in college I remember my best bud got a TV tuner card installed in his that had some limited output (he had to change the settings in the display panel each time to output to TV, it wouldn't just put out a signal by default).

Wow, your videocard must be pretty old then, maybe it's time to post a marketplace question. :ponder:

Most of my computers have S-Video out built into the graphics card. Even my 5 year old laptop has that. :)

I've never quite understood how S-Video is supposed to work anyway. Does it carry stereo sound as well as video output all through one cable?

No, it only carries seperate chroma and luma, no audio signals.

So basically instead of the yellow cable for video, you use the S-Video cable and still have to hook up red and white for stereo left and right. Is the picture really that much better?

Yes, the picture is much better, please don't tell me you are using regular composite for your DVD player. :ponder:

Umm, yeah. I didn't even know my DVD player had an S-video output, if it did/does they certainly didn't throw in a cable to hook it up with.

I used to run mine intop the VCR through composite.
...
And from there to the TV through RF.

...
The TV's AV ports were busted, if it helps mitigate my crimes.

You must have a macrovision free player if you were able to do that.

Nope.
If I hit record the VCR got upset.

It just didn't mess with stuff as long as it wasn't actually being used as anything more than an overglorified RF modulator.

Back to the actual topic, has anyone tried to use one of these? How is it? I've been looking at these for quite a while but haven't quite had the nads to make the plunge.

I haven't got one, but am tempted to pick up on the Viewsonic ones on ebay, people say they are about the best (but still not as good as a nice S-video television). The viewsonic site has more info (look in video processors) and Amazon has reviews.
Be a great fit for a dormroom.

I use a tv tuner box that I got here. I actually love it. I run my computer & my game systems on a 18" LCD flat panel display and the picture is just awesome. Dreamcast light gun games don't work though  . NES, Atari & Genny light gun games work fine though. My computer also supports video in/out so I can play the games in a window on my computer while surfing the web or whatever (usually just watch tv while working). The unit supports RF, composite & svideo so I have currently have 8 systems hooked up to it (9 if you count my computer), the RF systems (2600, 800, NES, CDX) are daisy chained to the coax input, the Gamecube and Saturn via composite w/ a switch box. And my 3DO & Dreamcast via Svideo using the same switch box. I replaced my older 19 inch TV with it and haven't regretted it one bit (other than seriously missing House of the Dead). It freed up a lot of room in my area and the picture is far superior to the TV that I had before.

Beh, I have tons of SV capable hardware, but not a damned decent TV to go with any of it. Not that I really care. Pisses me off that the end connector (male SV plug) costs fucking $12. No adaptors will I be making!
