can anyone help?
my ste boots up but with no a/b or trash can icons - it's not the drive - i've changed the ribbon cable - fdc chip - memory - dma chip - it won't boot from a hard drive but if i plug in an external floppy they evetually appear (as if i turned on a working ste with no disk in the drive) BUT! can't access the b drive and the files on a are garbled!
any suggestions would be helpful : )

Hmm, sounds the TOS-ROMs, RAM or the CPU are defective:
First try to change the RAMs.
Clean the Pins of GLUE and MMU and their sockets - they could be oxidated.
Then try this:
Open the STE, switch it on and then check pin 17 (HALT) on the 68k. When you press the RESET button, pins 17 and 18 (RESET) should go low. When you release button, both pins should go high and stay there. If machine finds error in RAM during initialisation, pin 17 (HALT) will go low and stay in that state...
Or try to change the TOS-ROM's.
