Some carts won´t fit into old 6-switch systems - SALU carts for example.

Anyone ever made an adaptor, so that this adaptor remains in the console and carts are put on top of this adaptor?

I know these adaptors from SNES, since I have a PAL system and NTSC SNES games won´t fit at all in a PAL system. You can put them on top of the adaptor and everything works fine (this adaptor also allows NTSC games to be played on PAL systems)

A cart slot extender would be pretty easy to build if you are not going for looks but rather for convenience. You could just have a board etched that accepts another cart slot and contains the necessary prongs to open certain cart slots, no trace routing would be needed.

What about something like those Rom Scanners, one of the multi cart adapters, it plugs into the Atari, then gives you several external cart slots to work with. You could make one of those larger if needed.

Yup, I made an extender for my 7800s with tight fit. Used a 2600 cart connector and
an old asteroids cartridge.
Clipped off the rom and removed the leftover pins. Soldered a chunk of perf board to the connector to anchor it to the asteroids case.
Then soldered 24 wires from the rom holes to the connector.
