it is a little black box about the size of a 5200 game with a 9-pin joystick cord attached. it looks like it could be the receiver part of a wireless joystick. this came from an ebay lot of assorted gaming accessories. no games were included, but i'm guessing it is for the sega master system.

anyone here know what this is?

What YOU have is the Infra Red receiver.

The Menacer is a light gun. You only seem to have the receiving part.

Google for Sega Menacer.

BTW, it's for the Genesis. It's Sega's equivilant to the SNES' Super Scope. Looks similar too.

Edit: Ooh.. Google rocks. I just found out I could use one with Corpse Killer! Not that the game's good, but it's nice to know. Now I guess I have to find one.

Here you go:

Scroll down. About 3/5 of the way.

At least you can hold it without causing severe ligament injuries. Super Scope 6... Bohze moi! What an ergonomical clusterfuck.

Personally, I wish they had just made Gun shaped guns instead of the weird Futuristic Bazooka trend they tried out. Both Sega and Nintendo. Weird.

I would like to get one and try it out on Corpse Killer too! What other games worked with it I wonder...

Maybe you never heard why they stopped making realistic toy guns? Doesn't do your company any good if your customers get shot by the cops while pointing your product at them.

Well, ywah, but you notice they eventually went BACK to making Gun shaped guns later on. Like it was a fad or something.

Well, in the case of the Menacer, many of it's parts are removable. You can take off the shoulder rest and the scope, which leaves you with a futuristic looking pistol. The Super Scope 6 can't do this, but there are far fewer games that use it anyways.

Personally, I think it's cool that Sega and Nintendo at least tried to do something new with their light guns... even if both were dismal failures.

Not really... at least, Sega and Nintendo didn't. As far as I know, the Super Scope 6 was the last light gun that Nintendo bothered with. Sega, on the other hand, didn't even release a light gun for the Dreamcast (not in North America anyways, due to concerns about "video games = shooting everyone at school" comparisons)... although I'm not sure about the Saturn. Even with the Master System, Sega has specifically made their light guns with as little resemblance to real guns as possible.

3rd parties made a decent number of light guns, and most of them were fairly realistic looking. If you want a realistic looking gun for the Genesis, there are always the Lethal Enforcers guns. They may be blue and pink, but at least they're shaped like real guns... you could always get some black spray paint I suppose.

That's what I did to my GunCon, but it was still far too massive to look like a real pistol.

And the SuperScope made an excellent prop for the MArio Bros. movie. :)

Apparently not. When I got mine(one of the gray ones before they decided the whole gun needed to be flourescent so they could sell in California(My Time Crisis box had a "not for sale in California" sticker)), my father, who is a firearms buff, immediatly tried to identify what it was styled after.
Alas, I've forgotten his guess, though I want to say it was a Desert Eagle(which are known for being massive pistols anyways).
