I'd like to know if any of you are working on games/projects as a result of these tutorial sessions. Even if you're just playing with ideas, please drop a short note in this thread to let me know what you have planned.
Thanks
A

Andrew:

I have started a new project as a direct result of your tutorial. My intent is to create, at first, a simple vertical scroller shoot-em-up. I know it's been done a million times, but I have to start somewhere. :)

Here is a link to my DUP bio page that shows this and other projects.

Please, try not to laugh too hard... :D

I had started on a game of Theseus and the Minotaur and had even gotten promission from the copyright holder. But I lost it when I formated my computer :/. Now that you've started these tutorials again I may start this back up.

The origional of this game can be found here...http://www.logicmazes.com/theseus.html

I am starting with a simple moving block.

Step 1:
Draw the screen, draw the player, move the player with the joystick, shoot the missile.

Step 2:
Two moving players and missiles.

Step 3:
Paddle movement with missiles.

Step 4:
Keypad input with missiles.

Step 5:
Joystick and keypad.

Step 6:
Design first game.

I will post my code for anyone who wants to help develop it...

I too will do the same. Nothing better than constructive criticism to make one a better person/programmer.

This was going to be a pet project of mine too. I liked Nibbler even though others may see it as another snake game. I wondered how Surrond would have looked if Allen would have used the ball and PF to animate the snake. It would have made for smoother movements. Keep me posted on this one

BTW, you all are welcome to post to [stella]. This is one way to help archive your code so hard drive crashes/re-formatting won't stop your progress. And don't be shy. We all started from somewhere.

have some ideas down on paper now.. mainly re-creations of classics, i.e. space invaders, snake, etc. with eye on bigger things, ports of 8-bit classics mostly.

great stuff man, hope you can find time to keep it going.

I'd like to evetually take a stab at doing some kind of Jumpman clone, but I'm waaaaay off from being able to do anything useful.

I got excited when I created a line across the screen

Well, it's a start! You're going to need lines for Jumpman! :)

I have some ideas, but way too rough to bother trying to explain. Especially since I'll probably rehash it into something completely different before I even start the first line of code. We'll see how I work on taming the beast enough to run some simple demos first.... and it's been many years since I've done much with assembly itself so give me some time.

But regardless, if it wasn't for your tutorials Andrew, I never would have even started. Thanks! :)

i started following the sessions about two weeks ago, my firstest ever 2600 game Shyfter is playing quite well but needs a shedload more work before i'm totally happy with it. A friend is talking about mastering up carts for an expo late 2004 so i don't know when my first game'll be out yet (assuming he wants it! =-)

Ta very much for the course Andrew, i'd never have got anywhere with the 2600 without it.

Well I just finished my first game, JWPong. Really basic, just a pong clone, but its a start. I lifted a lot of code from Kirk Israel's Joust Pong, so big thanks to Kirk. Also code from Andrew Davie, Thomas Jentzsch, Joe Grand and others I'm sure, thanks to all of you guys. Without this tutorial, I can say I would not have made it this far.

I definately have a whole new appreciation for what goes into the design and execution of creating a new game, let alone one for the 2600.

This was my first milestone and there are more to come.

Eventually I would like to create a 3 part game (3 separate games?) based on the characters in the animated series Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Anyway, attached is the binary and source to JWPong if you would like to play around with it.
