An absolutely brilliant game and one of the BEST on the SNES.
The sim stages are pretty simple and enjoyable, however, the action scenes are incredible. Again, nothing groundbreaking or overly difficult, but just solidly executed with a great soundtrack.

The way the sim and action scenes mesh together is also well done. You really can't go wrong by buying Actraiser, it's doubtful you'll find a better action/adventure title on SNES. Actraiser II unfortunately did not live up to the greatness that its predecessor set, so that effectively helped to kill off the series. :(

To give the original poster some perspective, the game was a release title when the SNES debuted in 1992. This game was a definite system showcaser. People would admire the mode-7 graphics (specially at the part where it zooms from above to the ground). The graphics were considered pretty groundbreaking at the time. Also the soundtrack is one of the best for the SNES. In short, the game showed off very well the capabilities of the SNES right from the start.

ActRaiser was a fun game, and the simulation part really added to it since there are power-ups that you can only get by playing through it.

Another title from the same company had similar gameplay to Dark Cloud: SoulBlazer. You'd fight through dungeons to find pieces to restore parts of each town. You didn't get to pick what went where, but it was a unique gameplay element at the time.
