G4 Top Ten classic console games of all time. Cannot have been an arcade game first so Pac-Man, Space Invaders, etc are not eligible.

10. Megamania
9. Enduro
8. H.E.R.O.
7. Adventure
6. Freeway
5. Kaboom
4. Combat
3. River Raid
2. Yars Revenge
1. Pitfall

No way that Freeway is better than Adventure and I would have put H.E.R.O. higher. Anybody else have an opinion?

why did they bother with the generic classic gaming moniker, that list is all VCS games

furthermore, its all atari and activision. no m-network or imagic games. although considering most of G4's audience wouldn't recognize 7 or 8 of those games, i guess it doesn't really matter much.

considering three fourths of their audience probably considers titles as old as Mario 64 a true classic, I spose they didnt do....that bad...

Not that bad a list... although they excluded anything that wasn't Atari. I also don't think Megamania is any good at all really (and especially not a top-10 game). Some notable games that they missed:

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (INTV)
Donkey Kong (ColecoVision)
Pitfall 2 (Atari 2600)
Space Invaders (Atari 2600)
Frogger (ColecoVision)
Venture (ColecoVision)
Video Olympics (Atari 2600)
Star Raiders or Solaris (Atari 2600)
B.C.'s Quest For Tires (ColecoVision)

And depending on what they consider classic, there are dozens of amazing C64 games that should totally make the list (Ultima IV, Bards Tale, Montezuma's Revenge, Space Taxi, etc, etc), and obviously a ridiculous amount of arcade games (Asteroids, Berzerk, Moon Patrol, etc).

They specifically said no arcade games. that makes it a little tougher, and eliminates a few of those choices............ They were good choices though.

Oh, so not even games that were ports of arcade games? That certainly sucks... Many of the best games got their start in the arcade.

I'd personally take Pitfall II over Pitfall anyday, where's it at? Oh yeah, there was a Pitfall II arcade game, not sure if they were related though.

Probably because their first game, Pitfall, is multiplatform. I have it on 2600, and 5200, and I think Coleco (or Intv?) And I think it was also available on NES and SMS, but won't swear to that, I know Pitfall II was.

If they're saying no games that were originally arcade games, then they should not allow Combat or Kaboom!, since those were based on Tank and Avalanche, respectively.

Enduro, of course, was hardly an original idea either, even if it's not directly based on one specific driving game.

(I won't even mention Yars' Revenge. I do consider that original ENOUGH.)

Was Pitfall II really available on NES? I thought it was just that abominable Super Pitfall.

One of my friends had it, but I don't remember if it was NES or SMS he had (been something like 15 years since I saw the thing, so probably SMS) Oops, I said And, I meant Or.

Curious, I'll certainly look for it, just out of curiosoty. It may have made Famicom or something as well. Did odyssey have a Pitfall game? I'd assume no since most it's graphics are stock on board stuff instead of cart roms.
