Mac users don't like old games?
Hmm...
If I want to play old MAC games, I'll use one of my old Macs. Not a DOS PC.

There IS no Nesticle on the Mac. There IS a program that plays WMV's, though. The point is, even being a Mac user, I still have a chance of at least viewing the movie. But I have no chance of playing the Nesticle demo. And, no, I will not install a slow DOS emulator just to try it.

Exactly right. And if you had an old 486 computer stashed in your attic or something, you could.
Sorry...I wasn't aware that you hated Nesticle that much

The point is that not everyone can view .wmv files (yes, I know that you can). Makes you wonder why the original .nsm file wasn't posted IN ADDITION TO the wmv file. It would be pretty small...and offers clear proof that it is not faked :ponder:

Where the hell do you get that from? When I used Windows, I was a Nesticle user! What made you assume I hate it? :?

Nooo...not at all (note the little laughing icon) :D

The thing is that it seems a little counter-productive to create a file that showcases your ability in a game...only to transfer that information to a lower-quality file that is MUCH larger and is certian to be killed off on any free server that it is hosted on. The whole thing is kinda strange if you think about it ;)

If you think about it this way, in order for ME to view the small teeny little Nesticle movie, I'd need a LOT more than what I have. How is THAT not counter-productive?

Counter-productive in the sense that the links to the video are being killed off by the very people who wish to view it. If the file were much smaller, the links would survive longer (and keeping a record of it is the whole point...otherwise why make a video in the first place?).

I'm gonna say it one more time.

Not everyone has the ability to use Nesticle.

Ok?

Got it now? That is the whole point. Not EVERYONE can use Nesticle. Not everyone wants to USE it. Not everyone has the ability to use it even if they wanted to.

More people have the ability to play a WMV file than can use a Nesticle movie.

Um...what movie? The link is dead.
(it would still be up if just the little nsm file were posted).

And I'm just gonna say it one more time...
"in addition to the .wmv file..."

In addition, fine. But not if it's the only choice.

Maybe if they had used a GOOD Codec in the first place, it'd also still be up. MPEG anyone?

Let's stop here before we get more out of hand.

Out of curiosity, who can't? I can watch them fine in Linux (A very small number have odd problems, but 95% of the time they work), and he seems to be able to view them on his Mac... so aside from the one or two people who are browsing these forums on their Amigas, I think pretty much everyone can view wmv's just fine.

I still object to them though, since the format has ties to a company that I dislike (I also don't like when people send me .doc or rtf files)... But whatever, at least it's not a RealMedia file

I understand your arguement about wanting NSM files though.

It really depends on what Codec it uses. I've gotten WMV and AVI files I can view fine. I've gotten ones thaty only have video. I've gotten only sound. I've gotten nonworking ones as well.

I don't know if it's related or not, but the Mega Man video and the Mario 3 video both had sound cut out and in once in a while.

I still haven't seen or viewed a working link to the Mario 3 run yet.

Maybe it is your player.. I put the Mario video on a video CD so I could show it to my nephews, and the sound is solid.

Ah hell, I'll just host them on my machine... help yourself:

Super Mario Bros 3 speed run (18MB)
Megaman 2 speed run (44MB)

I'd add in the Contra and Super C speed runs, but I haven't been able to penetrate FilePlanet's defenses yet.

It says I don't have permission to access smb3.wmv on this server.

I've already seen the MM run. Quite impressive, but it definitely exploits a lot of bugs and cheats to achieve the time, plus he obviously used a rapid fire button controller.

Don't abuse it, please. Anyone who hasn't seen it yet, grab it fast.

Whoops, my bad... I had the wrong permissions on the file. Both links should work fine now.

Beat the hell out of my server if you want, it should be able to handle it. Don't pass the link around though, since I'll probably only leave the files up for a week or two (or longer, since I'll probably forget they're there).

For the sound problem, check Versiontracker.com or Macupdate.com for the program Divx Doctor II. That'll fix the sound problems by converting the .avi to a .mov with properly encoded audio.

For the "nonworking" ones, let QuickTime Player open it up. Then view the movie properties. Change the left drop-down menu to Video Track and the right one to Format. That'll let you see the FourCC code of the codec that was used to encode the video. That way you know which codec to look for. (There still are some Windows-based encoders with no Mac decoders though.)
