As a kid I always thought of it as TAY-toh, but now that I know how Japanese words are transliterated, I am sure it's supposed to be TIE-toh.

It'll always be TAY-toh to me, though.

I say it as Tie-toh.

Sounds closer to what the Japanese intended it to sound like.

Tah - ee - toh Tie-toe or Tight-to, but don't put extra emphasis on anything. You're both correct.

Wrong!

It's spelled Taito, but it's pronounced:
Throatwarbler Mangrove

Play a game of Bust-A-Move 2, 3, or 4 and when the game starts up it says something that sounds like "Go eat a hot dog! Tai-TO!"

Anyways, the games pronouce it tie-TOE.

But yeah, for years I pronounced it Tay-toe. But it's wrong, so I adapted.

I grew up in a small town in Minnesota. Believe me, I know how to adapt my speech when I learn better!

True, but I stole that one from Monty Python.
(The TV show (Flying Circus), not the movies.)

:-)

p.s. I always pronounced it "Tie-Toe"

Alright! I'm correct!

:D

Though I'm hard of hearing, those speech lessons really paid off for sure if I can say Taito properly. :D

Of course... Graham Chapman, John Cleese. If I'm not mistaken, after Chapman says your line, Cleese replies, "You're a silly man."

Someone should write a FAQ about how to pronounce some of these companies names... I think there's been three seperate "how do you pronounce X?" posts in the last while (Eidos and Tengen if I recall correctly).

I think you're right! I forgot the "silly man" bit!! :-) :-)

desiv

btw, I usually pronounce it "X", unless it leads a vowel, then it's more like a 'z" sound..

Following that logic (if that is logic), it should be "z-eye-p". (all one syllable)

;)

Yeah, I have kind of been waffling between "zype" and "khype" (the "kh" that sounds like hacking up flem).

I think the founder(s) said in another thread it was pronounced like "zipe." My first thought was "zipe-ee."

Oh, Eidos is "eye-daws." Tengen, I THINK, is with a soft G (ten-jen).

I always said TaTo (like potato without the P) T long A T long O TAATOW

Probably wrong, but that's the way I always pronounced it, and I've never had anybody misunderstannd me, in the end, that's the important part IMO.

You're a very silly man and I'm not going to interview you.

Ah-ha! Anti-semitism!!

Not at all, it's not even a real nose. (Grabs huge fake nose)

Give me back my nose!

You can collect it at reception on the way out.

Etc, etc....

:D

Brilliant!!

I think this came up at some point too... if I recall correctly, the Xype guys themselves claimed that it was pronounced "zye-pee".

If I ever form a company, I'm going to make the name all consonants, that way people can pronounce it however they want... Look for new games from Nmrpsq Software!

I just pronounce Sega as "Sega", the same way the Sega Genesis start-up screens on Sonic games sang it.

Probably because all the commercials say "SEH-ga," the cart boot screens say "SEH-ga," and even Segata Sanshirou says "SEH-ga" -- and you don't wanna mess with him.

Plus. Sega is an American name (a contraction of SErvice GAmes), thus generally follows North American English phonetics.

My sonic says See-ga when it boots,

Anyways, a friend of mine imports toys and has contacts in Taito who pronounce it as Tie-Toe
