Hi guys,

Sorry if this has been covered ad-nauseam. I am going to need a new system this next month, and I am still running win98. I will of course be getting whatever is currently installed, but I do use all the DASM, Stella, etc software.

Bottom line, does XP let me do all that? I remember hearing something about DOS not being included on the new operating systems. What are you guys running?

Thanks, sorry if its the wrong forum..

Windows XP (and Windows 2000, for that matter) is not a good operating system to run DOS emulators. Some will work fine, but in my experience it's hit and miss. Your best bet is to setup a dual-boot system so you can fire up either Windows 98 or DOS and then run DOS emulators in that.

I have a ZIP drive and a disk that's formatted to be a little DOS hard-drive. This takes care of all my problems since DOS can't see my NTFS partitions anyway. Swappable HD's would do the trick too.

A lot of DOS stuff does work under XP, though. It's just that XP isn't based on a DOS sub-structure, so the DOS-box is now completely emulated.

I switched from Win95 to XP recently. DASM, DiStella etc. work fine. z26 (DOS) doesn't, but the windows version works perfect, just like AtariWin800.

Which other DOS based emulators are you using?

I'm more worried about my Pocket Programmer. I would still like to have a use-able system as it is out of the box (no dual disk drives, no partitions, etc,). It seems that XP 'should' do most of my work for me, so I can give it a go.

Thanks all. Hopefully I can now stop my dreaded blue screens (believe it or not, its a hardware failure....imagine that? I blamed the OS for three full reformats!)
