OK, if you're not a Dragon's Lair fan, just stop reading. Some people hate it. Fine..
But some of use love Dragon's Lair, simplistic or not...
Anyway, I loved it in the Arcades, had fun with the C64 version, I LOVED the Amiga version, I even didn't mind the junky PC CDROM (early) versions.
When the Digital Leisure stuff started coming out, it looked much nicer.
But I was torn. They had DVD-ROM (for the PC) and DVD-Video (for a DVD player). I wanted a PC version, but I really liked the concept of a DVD Player version too.. And there was this emulator out there, Daphne. And supposedly the best version was the DVD-ROM version.. (Missing bits or something on the original DVD-Video version..)
Well, my brother answered my quandry. He got me the 20th Anniversary DVD-Video set for XMas.
So I start playing it on the DVD player. Awkward to use, but fun and great looking...
I go back to check the Daphne page, and the 20th Anniversary editions (ROM or Video apparently) are now the preferred versions, have all the video AND proto video..
So I get Daphne and DVD2DAPH (conversion program) and run it..
I end up with 1.6 gig (don't even ask for em) of MPEGs after conversion. After DLing a few ROMs, I can now play Dragon's Lair on the PC and it feels EXACTLY as the original did!!! The 2.0 enhanced ROMs allows play of the drawbridge scene (Which I remember from the Amiga version) and the Proto version, which is kual!! The other (more original) ROMs have the order I remember!! It's still random, but the 2.0 starts with certain choices.. Older ROMs, I can jump into the rapids or whatever much quicker.
Awesome emulator!!!
On my machine (AMD 2100), the conversion from DVD (including proto video) to MPEG useable by Daphne was only a couple of hours.
Daphne also supports Space Ace (which came in the set) and a bunch of other games I don't have. (I didn't know there were that many Laser games).
I haven't converted Space Ace yet. Have to archive some Max Headroom and Dr Who episodes off to CD to clear up some HD space first :-) ).
Also, Daphne doesn't yet support Dragon's Lair II, which is also in the set, so I'll have to use the DVD player for that one for a bit.. I haven't tried the DVD player on the PC to play it, to see if it's more responsive.
All I can say is, without Daphne, the DVD set is still fun and worth it. With Daphne, it's SOOOO much better!!

Dragon's Lair 3D kicked ass! It got a bad review over at GameSpot, but that guy is a fucking moron and clearly not a fan! It did kick ass, it was PlayNintendo.com game of the year for 2002.

play on a DVD player due to missed commands on the remote. It
played fairly well on a computer, except for the short pauses. I'll
have to try out Daphne when I have a few hours to kill.
Man, I miss laser disc games. I'm waiting for a DVD release of
Super Don Quixote. Or Cliff Hanger, or nearly any of them, really.

Dragon's Lair II will be a long time in coming since it is based on a radically different set of hardware than the original LD games were. It used an Intel 386 'pc-based' hardware to run the game as compared to the (z80 based) that was used in the original, so Daphne would need a whole new processor emulator 'grafted in' so to speak ^^.
the creator of Daphne was interviewed last year on www.retrogamingradio.com from cge2002 i believe.

Yes the creater of Daphne was interviewed and is one of the episodes on retrogaming radio's site. I don't remember the specific month but I do remember listening to the interview.
I would love to see Us vs. Them made playable on a modern system but I am not going to hold my breath on this one. It was one of the last games made by Mylstar before they went out of business. Mylstar was formerly Gottlieb who made Q-Bert.

Only laserdisc games I liked were Firefox, Astron Belt, and Star Rider.

Actually, the XBox version of Daphne (and the Linux version???) already support Dragon's Lair 2.
Supposedly, it's in the CVS for the current version of Daphne for Windows.
But, I prefer not to bother with CVS and ripping and trying to create a framefile, etc...
When it's supported and one of the current ripping programs (DVD2Daph or one of the others) will rip it, then I'll go for it.
Until then, Dragon's Lair and Space Ace will keep me busy enough..
I actually was surprised to see how many LD games there were.
I remember, Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Dragon's Lair 2, Cliff Hanger and Firefox. But I don't think I've played any of the other games before...
Oh wait, I remember Time Traveler..
But apparently there were like 43 of them...

I've got a few of these DVD games you play in a regular DVD player. I don't have any instructions so have no idea how to play them.

Dragon's Lair and Space Ace worked on a similar premise. You saw a bit of animation and then to continue the story, you had to make the right move at the right time. Some sections were more forgiving then others and allowed to keep pressing the "correct" move until it took.
Space Ace was a little different in the sense that it had more branching points since you could choose to play as either Dexter or Space Ace and some areas were harder than others.
I am not too familiar with Mad Dog McCree but if I remember, it used a gun to point at the screen and you needed to fire at certain times at certain points. I am not sure how the DVD version does this.
