Well, I picked up my first Saturn game today since I got a system in the mail the other day. The only one the local store near me had was "Last Bronx" but it looked pretty cool, was complete in an uncracked case (even had a net-link insert flyer) and only $10 so I went for it. I'm glad I did, it seems to be a very Japanese influence fighter game (I suspect it may even be based on an anime or manga I haven't read/seen yet). Has anyone played this game, that would have an opinion on the best strategy to win, or how it would compare to other fighter games on the Saturn?

BTW I was at a loss as to whether this really fit in "Classic" or "Modern" but I leaned towards the former since it's a discontinued system that's over one generation old (since the Dreamcast came after it). If I'm wrong please LMK and/or a mod can move it.

I would have guessed classic too but what the hell do I know? Wasn't Last Bronx a Sega coin-op? I seem to remember it as a coin-op, I can't imagine too many games had Bronx in the name :)

Probably, but my knowledge of coin op fighters is pretty much either Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat (any version) and Capcom vs. (Whatever). I've seen KOF in a few aracades, but only within the last 1-2 years, and never played any of them.

So it's an arcade port eh? That's cool. I guess most good fighter games are anyway. :D

Last Bronx is TERRIBLE. If you liked that, you're in for gaming joygasms when you play anything else. Fighters Megamix, Fighting Vipers, Virtua Fighter 2...

Last Bronx is technically very impressive on the Saturn. It runs at 60fps in high rez and even has ring barriers. The animation is frankly incredible! I love the weapon trails effect and some of the moves really seem to have impact.

But as a fun game, it wasn't as fun as Virtua Fighter 2 (which also boasts similar technical visual stats) or the import Dead or Alive. I think that the more difficult combos and strategies in Last Bronx are darned hard to pull off. Now that VF4 is on PS2, I really can't play VF2 anymore so I actually now prefer Last Bronx for its unique nature. The final boss guy is appropriately madenning and infuriating.

As an aside from this once big-time Saturn fan, Fighter's MegaMix is a really fun brawler. It boasts light sourcing which was all the rage back, and stage / cage walls & barriers, but as a result uglier character models in half the resolution -- but still at 60fps so in motion it looks pretty good. It is a more arcade-style affair but still has enough techie stuff , it's a great game with tons of unlockable characters. Wish Sega would remake it on a newer system.

the graphix are nice for the game - and thats the first thing that attracted me to it - but the game overall as a fighter to me is horrible -
and battle arena toshinden is a piece of shit on the Saturn

I have noticed that play control seems really stilted. I'm used to fluid kicks, swings, and combos from playing Soul Calibur II and MKDA though so I'm probably jaded. :P

The stilted control is a holdover from other Sega 3D fighting games of that era. Fighting Vipers, Fighters Megamix and even Virtua Fighter 2 had this same type of control to some extent.

As Cafeman put it, Last Bronx is a technically impressive Saturn game (there's one level in particular that even has a rotating ceiling), but it's not the best fighting game on the console. Collision detection is spotty and the overall reliance on weapons was a gimmick that didn't work too well as some characters had too much of an advantage over others.

So which fighter on Saturn would best appeal to a Soul Calibur II junkie?

Nothing is even close to the feel and performance of Soul Calibur.

However, Dead or Alive is fast and gorgeous (given the hardware) with tons of "interesting" costumes to unlock. Great fast gameplay with danger zones and great animation and bouncy Bouncy BOUNCY! 60fps. Import only, no domestic version!

Fighter's MegaMix is my next suggestion for you. The blockiness of some characters will look a bit ugly at first but you'll get past it soon. It's a great game, not quite as slow & technical as any of the VF's. It has a kind of 'mission' mode to it as well, where you battle different sets of opponents (letter A down thru I or farther) and unlock extra characters this way. Really, it's a sweet game and one that would kick butt on a new system. I suggest this one.

FMM contains the Fighting Vipers game (and much more), so unless it's cheap I wouldn't recommend you waste your time looking for FV.
