So what games do you think could be considered "cult" arcade games
or pinball? By that I mean, games with loyal, perhaps obsessive followings
that lasted over the years.

I think Tempest & I Robot most easily fall into this catagory. And I'm
sure part of the reason is that home versions never came out.

And the mass popularity of Galaga & Ms Pac lasting till this day perhaps
puts them into their own category.

For more modern stuff, while I'm not too familar with the fighters, but
those seem to have their own devoted followings for the various major
series - Tekken, Virtua Fighter, etc.

I think Qix is a great game that I have loved over the years.

It doesn't have spectacular gameplay, but is oddly addictive. I just can't stop playing it for some reason. :D

Any game with a franchise still in existence probably has cult
status to someone. My picks:

R-Type
Bubble Bobble
Dance Dance Revolution
Darius
Q-Bert
Qix
Star Wars
Donkey Kong
Ms. Pac Man
Galaxian
Dragon's Lair

plus a bunch of stuff I've forgotten

I always looked as a "cult classic" as one that wasn't pupular with the mainstream but developed a serious following that lasted through the years. So then Galaga, Pacman, and the like wouldn't qualify.

I'd say: Satan's Hollow, Solar Fox, Gravitar, Rampart, Sinistar, Zwackery, many more to be sure.

Dragon's Lair for sure. It seems just about every system ever made has a version of it. Too bad that other than Daphne, there has never been a true reproduction of the game using modern equipment. I would like to be able to play an true, exact copy of the game again instead of the version put out by Digital Leisure that simulates the real thing.

I believe Gauntlet would be a good example.

Yes I think you've got the defination of what I'm wondering about
down pat.

I think the Colecovision seems to port cult type games: Pepper II,
Ladybug & the genius of Mr Do's Castle.

Laser Games definitely have a cult out there.

As far as others... Robotron although it was popular, it wasn't as huge a hit as other games like Pacman, or Space Invaders. But it definitely has a HUGE following today amongst classic gamers. So I'd nominate that one as well.

Of course in the arcade collecting circles, they have their 'rare ' holy grails like Quantum, Major Havoc's, Varkon, etc. Those are always highly sought after.

Me? I'm in the classic Taito cult :D

Death Race is another Exidy cult classic.

Also, I consider Jungle Hunt/King a cult classic too.

Isn't this basically a "name your favorite game" thread? Of the many titles that were produced in arcade form, maybe 10% were/are so common to not be considered a cult game. . .

Mine:
Lady Bug
APB
Showdown (odd poker game using the Exidy "C-shooter" hardware)
the Gallagher laserdisc game
Off The Wall
Truxton

Whoa...there's a bit of difference between a "cult" following and one that's starting it's own dark religion :P

Remember to think just slightly left of "popular"
