For those of you with experience in this what dollar value would you place on those hard to find prototype systems from highest to lowest? Whats the holy grail of all known prototype systems (color vectrex?) or do you value the Atari models higher?

I would say the color Vectrex is way up there, way too many Atari proto systems have been found.

That doesn't mean I would pay more than $250.00 for one though. :ponder:

I don't think it's fair to treat all Atari proto hardware as if it were the same rarity/value. Though there may be a couple of 2000s, 2700s and mindlinks, there's plenty of Atari '2600' hardware proto stuff that's one-of-a-kind to date.

That being said, I guess there's enough wealthy Vectrex collectors out there to create a bidding frenzy if a color Vectrex would ever come up for auction. Perhaps some of the Atari robot stuff (what's the thing called again?) would cause a similar uproar (Atari and robot collectors going berzerk)?

Cheers,
Marco

I agree.

So what would you say is the value of the Atari 2000?

or the 2700?

etc?

Oh man, that's a tough call. The couple of sales of 2000s and 2700s I know about were all around $2500, so maybe that's a reasonable indication of their value?

What do you think about the value of the PGP-1? Could that perhaps be the #1 item on the Atari 2600 proto hardware list? Perhaps a good idea for a poll "What 2600 proto hardware would people most like to own?"

Cheers,
Marco

Was the PGP-1 a prototype? I thought this was available for purchase by mail order. Granted, it is EXTREMELY rare and very few exist. But I thought a prototype would have been something that was never completed or else never sold as a product.

I wouldn't call them prototypes either but they seem to fall high on most collectors want lists.

Whats the value off the PGP-1? Would you consider it more valuable than an Atari 5100 or an Atari 2000?

Was the prototype version different from the ones sold previously by answer (in numbers less than 10)? The way that letter is written, it is hard to tell. I have only seen a couple photos of the PGP. One from AGH, Marco, and a couple from CGE. Anyone know a list of the owners?

Hm, intersting. The way I read it, they made a dozen test units which were bought by testers and some lucky buyers that had directly contacted Answer.

The one from CGE (previously Al Backiel's) and mine are the two units that are mentioned in the letter. Seeing that picture from AGH, it looks like there is another model?!

Marco

Personally, I would, but that's just me. I really have nothing to base that on. Perhaps the poll on here will shed some light on the appeal of the PGP-1.

Marco

How many Atari Video System X units are still floating around? I have one of my own in nice shape but it seems like there's more than four or five out there in the wild. In 1998 people were saying there were only two still around and I know thats not true.

There are at least 4 or 5. I know of someone who has an extra one that I have 'dibs' on. :)

Well, if you believe in the philosophy something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, I've been offered $10,000 for one working VR unit by two different people. :)

I agree...10 grand is way too much to devote to something that's just rotting away in the corner.

Though I pretty much have that same opinion for anything that does so :D
