Hello all --
I just wanted to comment on some of the labels for the contest! All of them look sweet...
I'm a computer geek and hobbyist and was wondering what tools you guys used to create your fantastic artwork?
Where do you get your ideas from?
Do you draw them on the screen using whatever paint package -- or do you use a drawing board?
Does anyone draw by hand, scan, and then colorize, etc?
I'm interested in the details that went into getting your work published here on the site.
All the images seem so professionally done... and I can't even draw a stickman that looks nice!
I'd love to see someon take the time and do a tutorial on how they designed their labels... that would be awesome!

Some of us use programs like Paint shop pro, Coral Draw and a few others, plus these systems will teach you to do stuff like move letters around and make shapes.

Here's how mine went. Pretty much.
1. Get an idea
2. Draw a sketch with pencil on paper
3. Throw away that sketch because it looks like crap
4. Draw another sketch and be somewhat happy with it
5. Scan that picture
6. Launch Photoshop
7. Use many hours reproducing the sketch with curved lines (note to self - start saving for a GOOD drawing tablet)
8. Color in basic colors
9. Add shadows and blend them in
10. Add highlights and blend them in
11. Add details
12. Add textures (either taken from photos or made from scratch in Photoshop)
13. Add text and stuff
A somewhat similar process that I used with this picture:
The Creation of Rapu-Santeri

Hi there!
I think there should be something like an "official" small icon/logo for the Atarivox module... with several upcoming titles supporting it, one should establish kind of like a unique identifier here...
With Go Fish! going to be the first AV game to be released, it should probably be done right here, right now...
Greetings,
Manuel

Wow it would be so hard judging something like this.
There's way too many great entries.
I used to participate in these contests but I always would wind up hanging my head in shame and spiraling into a deep period of depression after seeing the other entries.
I'm really liking this one:
COOL!
It non-traditional but very cool.

Nathan's are beautiful as always but surprisingly not my favorites this time around.

IMO there are too many minor variations now.
IMO a general design doesn't need to be submitted in all variations. If the homebrew author wants e.g. slightly different colors, a (un)framed image or a larger/smaller font, these simple modifications can be easily done after the contest.
Just my 0.015 € cents.

My favorites:
Renato Brito #7
Nathan Strum #1 and #2
This is not a submission... I was just goofing off with the idea in PSP, and didn't feel like finding a pencil.
[edit] more fun with the geometry tool... and an idea for an end label![/edit]

Very nice work, overall!
As for me, I started a 3D looking design, but I ran out of time to work on it, and Nathan Strum's submissions look a lot like my "idea", so I'll pass and wait for the next contest.
As for favorites:
I agree with SS. IMO,
Keitaro's entry
BEGS to be put on an Atari cartridge! It's a very stylish look.
@mojofltr: I like your design, also! I think you should finish it and submit it as a label!
Good luck everybody!

I agree with this in principle. However, the contests are for label designs, rather than illustrations. I've found when designing for other people, it's best to cover as many bases as possible, since you never know when one element may appeal to them and sell them on the entire design.
Personally, I'd prefer if the contests were for illustrations (or concepts), and then the winner would work with the homebrew author to finalize the design as they really want it. (An original design, or some variation on a classic Atari-esque layout, or whatever.) It'd make for fewer duplicate entries, and less work on the part of the artists. At least initially.
But since that isn't implied in the contest rules, I'm in the habit of submitting the labels as I originally design them, plus the two main Atari styles, in case that's what the author is looking for.
The way I look at it, is that I submitted two labels, not six. Maybe a way to deal with this in the future (if so desired) would be to just put the "main" designs on the contest page, and then the variations would only be shown if you clicked through to see the larger version.
Just food for thought.

I knew I wasn't going to have much time to work on these until the end, so I tried to avoid looking at the submissions until I had mine well under way. Even so, there's already a lot of similarity in the themes (which is to be expected with a fish-eating-fish game
Well, that and my computer died a couple of days ago, so I was lucky to finish the ones I did. I would've liked another day or two on them though, but such is life.
I had also started one with a shark eating Pesco and Funky Fish, but thought better of it.
Edit: I neglected to mention my favorites - Hernán Callo's #2, Keitaro's, and Michael Abbatemarco's (#2).

That's a good idea - perhaps Albert could organise a competition of some sort to design one.

As always the entries are awsome.
my Favs, Keitaro #1 (don't know why but I really like this one), then Nathan Strum #3
I would like to see AudioVox added to the winner if it is not already there.
