marketing NEVER ceases to amaze me (and i work closely with them on a daily basis). yeah, the ps2 has a HUGE install base, granted. but now, this VERY niche product is going to have to share shelf space with not only all of the triple "a" titles that the ps2 now sports, they will have to share space with the 100's upon 100's of ps1 titles that are fully compatible with the ps2.

now lets say this were to be released on the box or cube. bothe machines have sold through well into 100's of thousands of machines, if they haven't cracked a mil each. this compilation would be sharing shelf space with 15, maybe 20 titles currently on the box and maybe a dozen on the cube?

again, it really is PAINFUL to watch marketing people spin their collective wheels. ken, i AM looking forward to this but the fact that the ps2 was picked as the primary platform only SOLIDIFIES that other platforms won't see this compilation as the sales will be tiny (no offense).

d8thstar stares into crystal ball and sees potentially a pc port and MAYBE an xbox port simply because of the ease from pc to xbox...

ugh, i need a marketing degree

I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything but I'm not having that Ubersaurus. When PS2 was released in England it retailed at £320.00.

When Xbox is released is England it will retail at £300.00 - some report £350.00!!

At current exchange rate lets estimate thats $450.00.

I can currently purchase a return flight to New York from Air Lingus for the equiv of $150.00 (£99.00), walk into EB and pay $300.00(probably less by now) for an Xbox and by the time Ive got home Ive got an Xbox for the same price - if not less than I will pay in March when they are released over here.

When you say a "return flight" do you mean a roundtrip ticket (meaning both the trip out here and back?) If so, that sounds like an incredible price. Maybe now is the time for me to visit Europe on my whirlwind PAL game collecting tour.

The Xbox is still $300 over here, and I don't see that dropping in price anytime soon. I imagine if (when) Sony lowers the price of the PS2 that Microsoft will follow suit. Certainly before Christmas that'll happen, but right now the PS2 has too much momentum going for it and Sony doesn't need to lower the price.

Are you sure, that MS won't use any regional code protections?

First off, I agree with the concensus, PS2 is the wrong platform for this - as is the Xbox (both the same market) - but I see why Activision wanna go ahead with it.
I'm sure we'd see a GC port soon enough tho.

Secondly- I love the idea of the downloads bit. That could be the coolest part of it if its implementable.
(see, if you had it on GC, you could supply rare protos on card for the E-card reader for GBA )
This would also kinda solve the Ghostbusters thing (I dont think you should hack it - the movie tie in was absolutely vital to the feel of that game).
A little way down the line, the actual GB rom could 'accidentaly' become available online from,oooh.. anywhere.
I'm sure no-one would point the finger

My only outstanding concern is for games like Kaboom. They are ONLY playable with a paddle. Some games translate ok to other controllers (missile command was OK with stick) but kaboom is too quick for anything else.
Again (ahem) Gamecubes nice 'long travel' analogue shoulder keys would do the trick

After recent events they(and easyjet) went crazy and offered 1 million European flights from low-profile UK airports for £10.00 and 100,000 intercontinental flights for £100.00 - the offer may have run-out by now but it certainly would have been possible in December. The flighs were at silly times as well like departing from UK 3:30am etc.

It wouldn't have been a flight from Heathrow-JFK. More like Luton/Stanstead to a similarly small airstrip in US, but for £100 people didnt mind and its ruining British Airways - they lost £160million last qtr whereas Air Lingus made profit for the year of £58million.

Jess, I dig the idea about putting the game screen onto some object... I can picture being able to turn the thing into a kind of "Virtual Light Machine" or "Atari Video Music" but using the game screen as a basis. Like picture being able to wrap the screen onto a beating heart that beats in time to a CD you put in the drive. Then play the game. Does this give the 3D kids a little more incentive to buy the anthology? Maybe not, but the stoners will like it. :-)

As to marketing, here's a descriptive conversation:

M1: I'm sure hungry
M2: Me too. But look, there's a sandwich over there.
M1: I guess we could eat it.
M2: It looks fresh and delicious, but I'm not sure it's fresh and delicious enough.
M1: Maybe we should wait until we're sure.
(hours pass -- the lettuce begins to wilt, the cheese begins to melt, the mayo begins to congeal, the meat begins to smell)
M2: I don't know what we were thinking, that doesn't look fresh or delicious at all!
M1: Yeah, let's go try to find a better sandwich.
