Is there a proto for 2600 Galaga? What is the story behind Ataris decision not
to release a 2600 Galaga ? I think it could be done.
Galaxian has some good graphics but the gameplay goes boring very soon.
But it is a better version than the C 64 Galaxian, which looks like basic-written
game.

No one who owns Phoenix or Space Invaders needs a 2600 Galaxian.

There's no prototype for Galaga AFAIK, I don't think it would be feasible on the 2600. Just look how slow and choppy it gets on the 7800! There might be a proto for the 8-bit somewhere though.

Galaga was the sequel to Galaxian, and the third game in the series Gaplus is rarely seen. I've played it before and it's damn tough!

If you did not mind leaving the Atari world, the Turbo Grafx 16 Galaga 90 is my personal favorite. I have owned several full size Galagas, and I still enjoyed playing that version on the TurboExpress more! Wierd, but true. You can probably get the emulator on the web and see if its worth the moolah.

The NES version of Galaga is pretty much arcade perfect, but the screen does seem to be a little wider than what I remember in the arcade. The sounds are pretty close, but certain effects seem to chop off a split second too soon. Other than that, the graphics and patterns are essentially the same as the arcade version.

I love Galaxian! While it doesn't have the slew of options like Galaga does, it is awesome in it's own right!

The Colecovision version is darn near arcade perfect too!

I'm a fan of the 7800 Galaga too, but I really can't see it being done on the 2600. I mean, Galaxian barely came off!

You might see a Galaga binary file in some 2600 ROM lists, but it's only a Tawianese(sp?) version of river raid

I don't agree with your point of view. I own both Phoenix and Space Invaders and I DO need Galaxian in my collection. All 3 are a must have.

Galaxian may be some kind of Space Invaders clone but you can't deny that Galaxian has better graphics than Space Invaders (boring green) and the sound effects are more elaborate, also the enemies move in more interesting ways than just slide along right or left like in SI.

Now Phoenix is another story, this is a good arcade port considering the little horsepower the VCS can output, now I wouldn't attempt to compare Phoenix vs. Galaxian, I think it would be a more fair comparison between Galaxian and Space Invaders. Phoenix is a more complex game with several screens along the way, Galaxian was more intended to be a "First Wave" alien attack, there are no subsequent screens or scenarios so you should compare it to Space Invaders instead of Phoenix.

Hmm... here's my take...

The 2600 version is way too easy compared to the arcade Galaxian. It's not too much like the original. It's still fun to play, though.

There's no Galaga for the Atari 2600 to my knowledge, although someone did make a River Raid clone and tried to call that "Galaga."

Now if Demon Attack or another game had featured the "dropping down and capturing your ship" feature, Atari may have been inspired to do it...

Everyone is forgetting Gorf! I love that game! Flickery but fun. Phoenix, I think, is the definitive game of the type, though. And 2600 Galaga? Not possible, the 7800 version is wayyyyyy too dull on it's own, there's no real excitement. Now just picture that on the 2600.
