There is an NEC PC Engine that's just gone on sale in my local video game store. It's the original white Japanese model from 1987. The thing that interests me about it is that it has this big dark plastic thing attached to the top of it. And there is a scart lead coming out of it. It looks like a proper add-on, though it is a completely different colour (almost black) to the main PC Engine itself. I asked the shop assistant and he said that it was there so you could play import games, which sounds bull to me. Does anyone know what this big attachment with the scart lead is?
It could just be a scart convertor, but it seems like quite a bulky add on just for that purpose. Any suggestions will be read with interest...

Okay, well, it's like a giant interface/ add on. It's not just connected to the back, it entirely covers the back of the machine and comes down the sides of it too. Therefore in length it's the same size as the PC Engine, and in breadth it adds about two inches to the console's size. Only one cable can be seen coming out the top, and that's the aforementioned scart lead. I can't really say any more because that's all I know. Not much to go on I admit.

The RAU30 is an interface to connect the Supergrafx to the CD rom attachment.

Sounds like a TurboBooster, which allows upgraded video/audio from the unit.

I think it's the turbobooster too. It aint the Cd add-on, it's much rarer than that. I'd never heard of a Turbobooster before, I'll need to check it out on the net and see if there are any pictures of it.

It's not THAT rare, but a decent addon. It came in two varieties: TurboBooster and TurboBooster+. The TurboBooster+ had backup memory in it for save files and high scores.

Is the PC Engine version still called a turbo booster?

Those white ones didn't have any interface as I recall, and they were RF out only. Scart is a PAL lead so maybe something specific to the pal market? I know they did release PAL TG16s, maybe something for the old PCEs too?

Doubt the PCE version is called the TurboBooster, but I couldn't remember the PCE version's name and didn't look it up.
