I am used to playing this one on GBA, but this week I tried it on the computer(ROM). This game is a good example why I love the 2600. Simple as hell, but huge fun factor. I could play this for hours...its addictive. Sadly, however, my score is not improving so i'll put this one to bed.

i don't care too much for this game, but while playing it i did learn that someone had spilt off-brand mountain dew on my keyboard. so i got something out of it.

I don't really get how this game works. My first game, the difficulty ramped up very quickly. I made it to level 7 by 9,000 pts and died shortly thereafter (I'm assuming the number at the bottom to the left of your lives is some sort of level indicator). Second game I got nearly 25,000 pts before passing level 1! My final score for that game was 36,810.

{score excised} ***edit: change to 12,470. I was on the wrong difficulty before. The comments below still stand, though...***

Like Keir, I also do not understand how the difficulty progresses. It ramped up rapidly on my first game, but on my second game the lower-left number remained at "1" until I was around 20,000 points. When it started to advance, it rapidly did so. Once I had my first death, I only managed to take out one more enemy... there wasn't time to see them before my vault was struck. The explosion/ death throes also seem to be quite long. I'm using Stella; is this also the way that the game behaves on real hardware?

I'm using Z26. It appears that when emulating, it resets to the easy difficulty every game.

My new score at the correct difficulty (please ignore my last score):
12,360

Well, that's the end of this week's edition of the High Score Club. Congratulations to everyone on their high scores! I hope you all had fun with Vault Assault! And remember, this game is still available from the AtariAge store, so if you haven't already, do yourself a favor and buy yourself a copy!
