Tempest, is there any information available on the 2600 game Cabbage Patch Kids Day in the Park. According to what limited information is available there was only ever one copy made. Wasn't three games planned under the Cabbage Patch Kids label?

....wouldnt that have been a ColecoVision exclusive? Coleco was the one that created the actual Cabbage Patch dolls, it's hard to imagine them porting that franchisie over to Atari. Unless they wanted to show "how crappy the 2600 graphics were" compared to ColecoVision. Pfft.

Cabbage Patch Kids' Day in the Park was programmed by Ed Temple under sub-contract by Individeo for Coleco. According to an interview in Atari 2600 Connection, designer Ed English has the only known copy of this game.

I read it too. I was just curious to know if there was any other information on it or the other two that were originally planned. I had the Colecovision version and was jsut curious to know if the 2600 version was similiar.

Nope that is all I know as well. I suppose there is a good reason as to why Ed has never released the rom (probably copyright issues).

Why is it that games cannot be released due to copy write issues? I mean I could understand it if the 2600 was still being produced but it is technically a dead system so why would a massive corporation be interested in someone releasing a rom for a game that was made over 20 years ago? Do the people who made Cabbage Patch Kids feel that threatened over a forgotten game that they feel the need to sue the man who might release it for free to enthusiasts?
As it stands companies like Peanuts, the owners of the Pink Panther, Dungeons & Dragons, Coleco etc stand to make no money anyway from the games being hidden away and yet with a little thought they could charge a small royalty for any cartridges made by licensing it to the one who currently possesses the rom. The main point though is doesn't anyone else think that it is stupid that these games, which are a part of gaming history, should be denied to the general public just because the corporations that own the name feel the need to extract control over something that they long forgot about. I mean if the roms were that important surely they would have taken legal action to reclaim them all by now. Anyone agree or disagree.

I totally agree, Foxsolo.
I think these ROMS must be released to the public.
I really don't want to think about all those one-of-a-kind protos lying arround as dying victims of bit rot...

That I agree with also. Just think of all the games that are gonna be gone before we even knew that they where.

Would Ed Temple at least allow Tempest to see the game and possibly review it?
Maybe send some screen shots or some movies of the game being played?
Often times found proto's aren't finished enough to play anyways, but it is still cool to see even the foundation of a long lost Atari 2600 game.
If anyone has proved their honor of respecting peoples wish to not release a ROM out to the public even though that very ROM is directly in his hands... it's Tempest.
God bless him.

I have never contacted Ed Temple nor do I have his e-mail address. I would be more than willing to ask him, if someone can get in touch with him somehow.

I can name one off the top of my head. Mark of the Mole, the proto was lost before it could ever be dumped.

But lost because of bit rot? Not to my knowledge.

After re-reading the thread I see that Ed English...not Ed Temple supposedly has the only known copy. Altho I'm guessing Ed Temple would be a wealth of information I did find a way to contact Ed English

http://www.intermute...management.html

Looks like he is the founder and CEO of InterMute.
Maybe that would be a good place to try and pursue this proto?
Might be a long shot though. His direct email isn't listed.

Ahh right you are (I'm constantly mixing up those names).

Yes I found the same page a year or so ago, but I'm not comfortable contacting people through their business.

Sku_u found an unknown game that seems to be very difficult to dump:

mystgmfullscrn.jpg

I'm not saying that it's the only one out there and that it is dying from bit rot, but I feel very uncomfortable about the fact that it's still 'caged'.

Can somebody please free this game before it's too late?

It's probably an unknown Home Vision game, hacked by Datatech.
Here's some more info:
http://www.atariage....own home vision

This game has to be saved, Tempest.
AFAIK it's a one-of-a-kind.

Interesting. I've heard of prototype games being put in pirate multicarts on the NES before, but not on the 2600. This game may very well only exist in multicart form, or it just be very rare like that Word War cart from Sancho that popped up last year. You just never know with overseas games...

I hope this one can be dumped. :)

Just a question that has recently crossed my mind. Has anyone ever been sued for dumping a prototype? I ask for I never heard of Sesame Street or The Jim Henson Workshop suing the people who dumped Miss Piggys Wedding or Grovers Musical show. Has Atari sued anyone over dumping the A-Team or Saboteur etc. Would it actually be worth anyone's while to sue over a game that nobody outside the gaming community would care about? What if the rom was just dumped how could a company sue when no money was made and no attempt to decieve or deny was made? How could a company claim that they lost money when the prototype in question was either (a) unfinished and so technically unplayable or (b) made for a system that is not made any more? Anyone got any answers?

Saving a game has priority over releasing it to the public, but I also believe that a game deserves to be played.

And yes, I like to play games.
Especially rare ones.
