No problem, agreed. I just wanted to point out that in these discussions the one goal (dumping) is often mixed in with the other (playing), while both are not necessarily connected.

Cheers,
Marco

B I really don't want to think about all those one-of-a-kind protos lying arround as dying victims of bit rot...
After reading the answers to my question, I think it's now quite fair to state that A has nothing to do with B.

Saving a game has priority over releasing it to the public, but I also believe that a game deserves to be played.

And yes, I like to play games.
Especially rare ones.

This game may very well only exist in multicart form, or it just be very rare like that Word War cart from Sancho that popped up last year.

Tempest. I ask again because I am a curious soul but has anyone ever been sued for dumping a prototype rom? :?

Well I got the answer I was asking from Marco. He seemed pretty definte about the fact that no one had ever been successfully sued for releasing an unreleased prototype rom. Thanks for the Information Marco.

I found this game. I know, I know, sounds crazy. But I did.

I'll dump it when I find someone in the Bay Are with an EPROM reader. I've been pouring over the chips all night and day, and I'm pretty sure this is really it. I found it at a flea market of all places! Did Ed Temple or Ed English die?

Work with someone who can put out a release of the game and then sell it.

250 copies X $50 a pop

Thats what everyone else does.

After the release sells out THEN dump it.

AFAIK both are still very much alive. There are often more copies of a prototype floating around than people think, even the programmers.

I hope you can get these EPROMs dumped. You have a very cool find there!

Well, the reason I ask if they are dead is that most of the stuff at the Flea Market, particularly the area where I found these, comes from abandoned houses, or homes that have been cleaned after someone dies.

I originally thought these were from Konami, since some of the games were made by Konami, but I'm not so sure of that, since some of the games were straight up Coleco...

i will keep everyone updated about the dumping process. I need someone in the Bay Area. Also, need a Colecovision, but I know where to find one of thsoe for temporary use.

They are...I just talked to Ed English last week.

Nice find...I hope you can dump all these EPROMs soon. I'd love to see what's on these.

So, could you give me his contact info? I'd love to talk with him about these chips. he might be able to put me onto where they came from.

I'll ask him first. But he's not going to know...they didn't come from him.

2600 Coleco stuff was all contracted out. English and Temple only did a few 2600 games for Coleco via their company Individeo. Those EPROMs you have are all Coleco prototypes and must have come from a former Coleco employee. I'm not convinced that's the 2600 version of CPK (despite the fact that it says Atari on it)...those all look like ColecoVision prototypes to me. Let's see what you've got first before I start bugging Ed English about it...there are people far more knowledgeable about this stuff than he is. Meet up with someone in your area or make arrangements to send the stuff to someone trustworthy (like CPUWIZ or Curt Vendel) and get everything archived...with all deliberate speed.

And you might want to cover up that open window (probably dead already if it had anything on it)...

Yeah, I figured the open one is dead.

See, I know the Atari version of Cabbage Patch was contracted out, but Coleco owned the rights to the game, and frankly, why on earth would they write Atari on those ROMs if they weren't for some sort of Atari device....

Still, the EPROM reader will tell.

Well I'm quite excited to think that there may be something new for the ColecoVision here - just hope that they're not ALL prototype copies of games that were later officially released.

Let's find out for sure first before we start a big hullabaloo (which inevitably happens every time someone shows up with stuff like this). You have a whole mess of Coleco prototypes there...let's see what's on them.

Not necessarily. I've come across prototypes without covers on the windows that have turned out just fine. In fact, other than the Meltdown proto (which was dead because of electrical damage), I've never come across a dead prototype. They're tougher than you think.

So the story of your Meltdown proto is over?

For now. It doesn't look like the EPROM is repairable, but you never know.
