  • Welcome Back!

Posted Mon Sep 19, 2005 8:34 PM

Important note: This weeks competition is over. If you still wish to discuss this game, then feel free to do so, but no further scores will be accepted. Thanks to everyone for all their contributions! Please join in on the latest High Score Club competition!

Here you are, at the olympics, about to go for the gold. You never thought you'd make it this far, but the cheer of the crowd and the cold bite of the wind remind you that it's real. Don't forget all the advice your coach taught you. The only thing standing between you and a record time is that tree!

Game Information

  • Game Name: Skiing
  • Released By: Activision, 1980
  • Left Difficulty: B / Novice - No scrolling screen
  • Right Difficulty: A / Expert - Manual Jumps
  • Game Mode: Game 8 - 900 meters, Olympic hill
  • Chosen By: 128bytes
Post your scores right here in this thread, and I will add them to the list. Remember to play the game with the recommended game mode and difficulty settings as shown above so that your scores will be consistent with everyone elses. The deadline for posting scores will be approximately Tuesday, Sept 27th at 1:30 AM (CST). In case you haven't already done so, please read the High Score Club rules. There is other useful information contained in that previous link, including a list of previous High Score Club games!

As before, next week's game will be chosen by the next person in the member list, which happens to be Goochman! Please send me a private message with your choice of game for next week!

If you are not a member of the High Score Club, but would like to be, then all you have to do is post a score for this week's game, and I'll add you to the list!

Scoring Points in Skiing
You do not score points in Skiing, rather you are judged based on the time it took to complete the run. Running into obstacles slows you down, while skiing straight down will cause you to go very fast.
Hints and Tips

The Manual said:

As always, you really should read the manual.

What's that? You don't have the manual? Well, AtariAge happens to have both a scanned copy and a typed version of it online for your reading pleasure. Here are the tips the manual provides:

- The keys to success in Skiing by ACTIVISION, just as in real skiing, are learning to control the tips of your skis and anticipating and avoiding trouble.

- Keep your skis pointed as straight down the hill as possible.  The less you traverse across the slope, the faster you'll make it to the bottom.

- Pick your line through the trees and gates by constantly looking ahead of your position toward the bottom of the screen.  When you see the next set of treesand/or gates, point your skis to miss the trees or pass through the gates.  Of course, the more you ski any particular hill, the more familiar with it you will become.  To get the fastest times, you must memorize the run and ski the shortest possible route down the hill or through the gates.

- When you want to maneuver, I suggest you tap your Joystick lightly to the right or left to move your skis or change direction, rather than push heavily on the stick.  There are 8 different positions for your skis (see my diagram below) and 15 different directions you can go (downhill plus two possible angles for each left or right ski position).

- We're organizing an Activision Ski Team.  To qualify, you must run slalom course 3 (Game 3) in under 28.2 seconds.  If you break that time, send us a picture of the screen and we will enroll you as a member.  And if you break 28 seconds, consider yourself Olympic caliber.

- Of course, not everyone wants to ski down a hill in record time.  Some of you may just like to ski back and forth and down the hill at your own pace.  Go ahead, if you wish.

Tips:
- Stay to the center wherever you can so you have more flexibility.
- Look ahead down the "fall line" to anticipate oncoming trees and moguls
- Try to keep your tips down as much as possible - the straighter they are, the faster you will go. Try to move gradually to maintain speed.
- Better to slow down than to hit a tree
- Press the red button just before going over a mogul or you will fall.
- Going over moguls does not cost you any significant time

The fastest route goes down the right side of the screen. By this, I mean, you should not cross the center of the screen the entire race until you pass the last tree on the left side of that tree. Look at my pictures to see where my skier is positioned at the end, in relation to the time display at the top of the screen. This is where you should end up. This tip alone will get you on the right track! Good luck!

Good luck everyone!

Starting out with 55.15. Thanks for giving those fingers are rest this week. I can only get 29.07 on course three, though. It's early.

Glad you like it!

BTW, Ze_ro, I chose the game, not LarcenTyler. ;)

I have had Activision Skiing since it first came out, and it is a great game (my second Bob Whitehead-written choice for the HSC - my first was Stampede). Since most people are used to the slalom course, I chose downhill because it is equally fun and should be new for most people.

We're allowed to choose games like this? Well if that's the case, why didn't I choose Pole Position?! I would've rocked with that one!

At any rate, here's my first entry. (And by the way, Ze_ro, I didn't pick this game.)

You are probably using the same route that I am because I was stuck at 39.32 as well. There is one section towards the middle where I eliminated 2 moves and that pushed my time below 39.32. I think I can tie Todd's time of 39.25 ;)

Nice

Did you still see room for improvement, or do you think that might be a perfect score?

I got my score down to 39.30 and have been playing this game way too much today, so I'll take a break and get back to it later in the week possibly.

There may still be a possibility to shave off another hundreth of a second but it will be tough!
