Hints and Tips

The Manual said:

As always, you really should read the manual.

What's that? You don't have the manual? AtariAge has a typed copy online. In case you're too lazy to click that link, here's the hints the manual provides:

* Shift into low gear after crashing. It will take you less time to get back up to speed.
* Go flat out on straights. This is where you can make time.
* Stay in the centre on straights so you can easily pass to the left or right of other cars.
* Take the inside lane on curves whenever possible. If you have to pass, it's easier to shift from the inside lane to the outside lane than the other way around.
* Try to keep your car as straight as possible to avoid skids. Skids slow you down.

sku_u said:

To achieve a perfect score, practice the initial shift so you time it perfectly and tap to steer. This helps avoid excessive skidding/allows you to time the turns with minimal movement. I use a modified NES controller to play this one. The joypads also work well.

homerwannabee said:

For the this tip you will have to trust me on this one. After you pass the first level there is a trick to avoiding cars. Play chicken with them. When you first see the car in the far off distance be sure to drive directly into their lane. At a certain moment either they will start vear off into the other lane or they will continue to drive forward. After that certain moment if they are still moving forward then you vear into the other lane. I got this score the first time I decided to play the chicken game.

LarcenTyler said:

One last tip: When taking the hairpin curve (the fourth turn) you can just quickly shift into low gear for a second just long enough to slow down a little, then shift back to high gear and you'll be able to negate the curve without losing too much time.

I know I can turn in a 60,910 with a little effort. I'll have to play this week, I guess.

I loved this game as a kid, and then my interest faded untill 1996 with the release of Namco Museum, and it came back to me. In 1997, I finally got my hands on the Atari 2600 cartridge of this game that I so desired.

I might play on actual hardware, but here's my first score.

Also, I might as well add this tip:

When you're about to go into the hairpin curve (the fourth turn, second left) immediately shift into low gear, and as soon as you go into the curve itself, shift into high gear. This will result in better control and you won't lose as much time trying to negate it. Watch out for rival cars though!

Won this game in a lot but hadn't played it before. Driving by joystick is odd. I gather 60,910 is the max score?

On a side note, the Depeche Mode concert was excellent. The Bravery opened for them and I liked their performance so much I picked up their album from iTunes when I got home.

60,910 for me. I ran that in my first race (then again, I've scored the max perfect score on all tracks for all home versions of Pole Position I and II multiple times as well as the PS versions.) This is one game I am confident I can even beat the great Todd Rogers in even after a few beers. ;-)

Nope. I don't think that is possible.

BTW, the one Pole Position/ Pole Position II score I've never been able to match is 75,500 on the test track of the 7800 version of Pole Position II. I've tried 100s of times and always end up scoring 74,500. I'm not convinced 75,500 is possible.
