sandmountainslim
I was looking thru all of my VCS carts today and picked out the ones which were my original collection back in the early days I have a little over 200 games now but when I was a kid we were not rolling in money so I only got games at Bday or Christmas time, the ones I had then were/are: Pac-Man Combat Defender Donkey Kong Super Breakout Qbert Frogger Space Jockey Jungle Hunt Video Pinball Space Invaders Yar's Revenge Adventure Pole Position Asteroids A poor collection of Commons but I thought they were the shiznit then
Phineasfool
Hey, at least you had one back then. We couldn't ever afford one when I was younger. I had to resort to going to friends' houses to play.
Omegamatrix
Ah, yes. The nostalgia factor. I remember all these games from my cousins house as I didn't actually own an atari until 2005. Yars' Revenge Combat Asteroids Pitfall! Jungle hunt Fast Food Indy 500 Frogger Pac-Man Pole Position
Room 34
I gave a bunch of my Atari games to a friend who was moving away after 8th grade, and then in high school I gave a few more to the kids across the street. But not long after that, I already started to be perceived as a 2600 collector (a.k.a nutjob). This was in the NES era. A couple friends of mine went to a local pawn shop and bought me 7 copies of Combat. (Thanks, guys.) Anyway... I kept maybe 20 or so of my games, and I still have all of those today, plus I managed to re-acquire all of the games I had given away over the years, bringing me to... The 2600 games I owned "back in the day" (that is, games I bought back when they were still available retail, including post-crash): Adventure Air-Sea Battle Asteroids Basketball Berzerk Bowling Breakout Centipede Combat Commando Crystal Castles Defender Dig Dug Donkey Kong Frogger Grand Prix Home Run Indy 500 Infiltrate Journey Escape Moon Patrol Pac-Man Pitfall! Pole Position RealSports Baseball RealSports Football River Raid Solaris Space Invaders Space Jockey Space War Star Raiders Super Breakout Super Challenge Baseball Super Challenge Football Tennis Towering Inferno Trick Shot Vanguard Video Checkers Video Olympics Yars' Revenge This list was harder to compile than I thought it would be, since there were many games that either my grandma had, or that I had borrowed from friends for extended periods of time. But I'm pretty sure this is the complete list of games I owned in the days before I considered the 2600 passé.
kencrisis
My tiny collection from when I was a kid (sadly all gone but happily re-purchased) was comprised of: Combat Bump 'n' Jump Vanguard Missile Command Stampede Breakout River Raid Chopper Command Defender Amazing all the hours spent playing just these few games. Of course friends brought over other ones, so there was a bit more of a rotation.
NE146
I don't remember exactly what I had as a kid. I still have them all but they've been infiltrated somewhat. I do know I had a collection of about 75+ games though. That was my count.
The_Laird
When I got my 2600 for Christmas I only had 3 games: Centipede Defender 2 Crossbow I bought 4 more games that very week with xmas money: Amour Ambush Enduro Chopper Command Deadly Discs Then my collection just grew and grew. I remember that I had 50+ when I sold off my orginal collection.
Rom Hunter
Demon Attack E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial Enduro Jawbreaker Marauder Missile Command Pitfall II - Lost Caverns Raiders of the Lost Ark Robot Tank Space Invaders StarMaster Super Cobra Swordquest - FireWorld Vanguard Yars' Revenge I played them a lot, together with my younger brother. We used to 'duck for cover' when a game of Missile Command ended. The fist game I ever 'played' on our big old black-and-white television set was Space Invaders. The television had a pre-historic antenna-input that needed an adaptor, so we couldn't get a picture on screen. We could only hear the 'chomp-chomp' sound of the Invaders while staring at a garbled white noise screen. Very scary (and very frustrating). We had to wait a whole day and a whole night before we could finally play... I remember I went to the shop with a friend to buy Pitfall II, but it was completely sold out. My second choice was Berzerk (because I loved the label picture), but the guy in the shop said I would be better off with Marauder instead (and he was right). He had already helped me once by saying that Jawbreaker was a better choice than Pac-Man (which was true), so I took the bait. We came back with both StarMaster and Marauder, because both games together were of the same price as Pitfall II. My mother wasn't too happy with that... I also remember I went back to the shop with my Tutankham after reaching the end within just one afternoon. The shop owner understood my 'problem' and gave me Super Cobra instead. Demon Attack was another story. My grandfather was hit by a car when he wanted to buy Demon Attack for me. His car was crashed but he was lucky and didn't got injured. Talking about demons attacking... My favourite game was Raiders of the Lost Ark. This game really boggled my mind. It took me months before I reached the end. I shouted a hole through the roof when I finally discovered the Ark. One day a friend of mine had bought Zaxxon. He told me I could play it the next day. I had only seen the Colecovision pictures until then, so I really couldn't sleep that night. I had visions of blasting my way through pseudo 3D-worlds, while avoiding all kinds of rockets and missiles. When I finally saw the game, I was totally shocked by it. I still regret to this day that I've sold my first VCS, together with these fifteen games. Ah, the memories... BTW: E.T., FireWorld and Yars' Revenge came bundled togeter as a cheap offer. I remember getting them for my birthday and I was very disappointed by the first two, especially FireWorld. Although I managed to complete E.T., I never managed to figure out FireWorld. Recycled
I had a shitty collection when I was a kid: Space Invaders Bowling Home Run Air Sea Battle Pac Man Freeway Basketball Breakout Haunted House although, I think I might of had Pitfall! I had the knack for picking the wrong games. My uncle would get some decent ones every once in-a-while, i.e. Demon Attack, Spider-Man, Starmaster. Lord Helmet
Funny, I was thinking about starting a thread like this the other day... I can't remember them all, but the ones I do remember owning: Combat Pac-Man Defender Chopper Command Demon Attack Atlantis Demond to Diamonds Pitfall Laser Blast Donkey Kong Star Raiders Starmaster Star Wars: TESB Frogger Video Pinball Basketball Battlezone Centipede Pele's Soccer Grand Prix Keystone Kapers Ms Pac-Man Pole Position Raiders of the Lost Ark River Raid Super Challenge Football Vanguard Venture Checkers (Activision) Fire Fighter Tennis Zaxxon Coconuts Stargate (Pretty certain this is the last 2600 game I got back then) I'm sure there were a few more. Funny that I never owned Adventure, Space Invaders, Asteroids, or Berzerk. I played the hell out of them at friends houses, but never owned them. One of the greatest things I remember as a kid was getting to spend the night a t a friends house that had different games than you. I'd sneak a bunch of my favorite games out of my house in my school bag, and stay up all night on friday...eating junk food and rolling the score on Asteroids at my best friends house...ahhh, memories I had the knack for picking the wrong games. 1017736[/snapback] Dude, the way I remember it, there were very few "wrong" games. We played the hell out of EVERYTHING. Edited February 13, 2006 by Lord Helmet
Gabriel
It's hard to remember what exactly I had, but here's a shot at a list: Laser Blast Combat Missile Command Pac-Man E.T. Pitfall II Star Voyager Defender Space Invaders Demon Attack Checkers (Activision) Star Wars: Jedi Arena Warlords Super Breakout Star Raiders Yar's Revenge Adventure Donkey Kong Venture Asteroids Battlezone Raiders of the Lost Ark Zaxxon Basic Programming Edit: Night Driver I thought I had more. The number 32 keeps popping to mind. I had one of those cartridge holder things and it was full or mostly full. After the crash and years after the 2600 was dead (but before I entered the "serious" realm of collecting), I acquired: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Stargate (none of this Defender II nonsense) and about 20 games (new and duplicate) from a friend. But all those original carts are gone, as well as my original system. When I was moving in 2001, I foolishly gave it all away under the unbelievably stupid idea that emulation would satisfy my classic gaming urges and I'd never need that old stuff ever again. Oh well. I have more games now than I did back then anyway. Edited February 13, 2006 by Gabriel

Gabriel
Dude, the way I remember it, there were very few "wrong" games. We played the hell out of EVERYTHING. There were definitely stinkers, but they weren't really the same games that are derided today. For instance, Pac-Man and E.T. are extensively ridiculed today, but back then they were games lots of people played regularly. Combat seems to have gotten a lot of praise in recent years but, back in the day, it was the game you only played when you didn't own anything else, and it was considered the cream of the crap. Of course, there were stinkers, and they're stinkers to this day. I still remember being overwhelmed with how bad Swordquest: Earthworld sucked. Dino
I remember growing up we could never afford an Atari. My cousin would come over on the holidays and leave his VCS with us for a week. We would play from early morning to late at night non-stop. Our mom would get so upset after a few days that she would call my cousin and get him to come and pick it up. He eventually gave me the system but no games. both the power supply and joysticks were shot, but I have kept the system all these years. Even though it was all beat up and I have many systems that are in far better condition, I could never part with my first VCS.....

Atari Rescue Group
Most of the games I had were for two players -- my brother and I played them together and Mom would typically just hear a low rumble of the game sounds and us chattering instead of loud roaring of the two us chasing each other through the house. Dad got the Video Chess one for himself, but I was pretty good at levels 1 & 2.... We had these back in the day: Air-Sea Battle Video Chess Combat Surround Tennis Backgammon Space Invaders Flag Capture Indy 500 River Raid Asteroids Slot Racers Dodge 'em Football Street Racer Canyon Bomber Miniature Golf Defender Home Run Basketball Bowling Sky Diver Video Olympics Casino Slot Machine Outlaw Warlords Breakout Human Cannonball Space War
Cassidy Nolen
Couldn't name them off my head, but I still have them all. Finally, in 2000, all the ones from Dad's place finally rejoined the ones from Mom's. I still have them all in a separate place from the rest of my collection. Mostly commons but with a Piece O Cake in the mix Man I played the crap out of my Atari growing up! Honestly, if I could take one thing in a fire from my house, that drawer of games and my childhood four switch would be it. Everything else should be insured, but you can't replace those memories.
