Important Note: This week's competition is over, and no further scores will be accepted. If you still wish to discuss Canyon Bomber and compare scores in this thread, feel free to do so, but they will not be counted in the standings.

There's a thick layer of bricks in a canyon! How it got there is anybody's guess, but you've been chosen to get rid of them. It's up to you to drop bombs from your aircraft and get rid of them, while a rival bomber tries to do the same. Destroy layer upon layer, but make your shots count. Too many misses and you're going back to kitchen duty! So get your bomber ready, because this week's game is Canyon Bomber!

Game Information

  • Game Name: Canyon Bomber
  • Released By: Atari, 1979
  • Left Difficulty: A / Expert - One bomb drop at a time
  • Right Difficulty: A / Expert - One bomb drop at a time
  • Game Mode: Game 1 - Canyon Bomber, 1 Player vs Computer
  • Chosen By: Ze_ro
Post your scores right here in this thread, and I will add them to the list. Remember to play the game with the recommended game mode and difficulty settings as shown above so that your scores will be consistent with everyone elses. The deadline for posting scores will be approximately Tuesday, March 21st at 1:30 AM (CST). In case you haven't already done so, please read the High Score Club rules. There is other useful information contained in that previous link, including a list of previous High Score Club games!

As before, next week's game will be chosen by the next person in the member list, which happens to be cyberneticimplant! Please send me a private message with your choice of game for next week!

If you are not a member of the High Score Club, but would like to be, then all you have to do is post a score for this week's game, and I'll add you to the list!

Scoring Points in Canyon Bomber

  • You compete against the computer for a higher score. A miss is recorded each time you fail to hit a target in the canyon. A miss is also recorded if your plan travels across the canyon without dropping a bomb.
  • There are eight bars of bricks which extend acroos the canyon. Each brick in the first two bars is worth one point each. The bricks in the third and fourth bars are worth two points each. In the fifth and sixth bars the bricks are worth three points each, and the bricks in the last or bottom two bars are worth four points each.
  • If all of the bricks in the canyon are eliminated, a new canyon appears on the screen and play continues.
Hints and Tips

The Manual said:

As always, you really should read the manual.

What's that? You don't have the manual? Well, AtariAge has both a scanned copy and a typed copy of the manual online. Unfortunately, the manual provides no specific hints.

Tips:

1) Make the sides your 1st priority. Clear the canyon from the outside in. This way, when you are near finishing it, you will leave yourself an opportunity to hit the bricks in the middle, regardless of which side the plane comes out or how fast. Resist the temptation to drop bombs in the middle of the canyon, you'll get your chance in the end.

2) Look to see where the bomb exits each different plane. This will help you time your shots just right.

A lot of people will probably think this is just a dusty, boring old game... but I always felt this one was a bit of an unappreciated classic.

For anyone who happens to be exceptionally good at this game, Twin Galaxies has a cash bounty available... You could net yourself a nice $50 if you can score 3000 points or more (is this even possible??)

Just a reminder that you can use the joystick controller for Canyon Bomber, by tilting the joystick to the left and right for the respective players to drop a bomb. I may see about picking this up sometime.

First score, 340.

Guess it's emulator week - this game rolls my C= 1084S as it generates VSYNC for 14 lines instead of 3.

I don't see why not...does the difficulty increase at all in subsequent canyons? I didn't notice that it was any harder on the second canyon; it was easier in some respects since the computer was long since out of bombs and so I had no competition.

D'oh! You're right... oh well, I added a bounty for it so there's still some incentive.

My wife took my digital camera to NYC this weekend, but...

3,033!

No need to count it though because I played this particular game on dif. b/b

I recorded this game on my VCR so at least I'll get the new world record on Twin Galaxies

Too bad I was too late for the bounty

Well, originally I figured everyone would play against the computer... but does it actually make it any harder or easier in this case? You guys obviously have more experience with this one than I do. I did say Player vs. Computer in the game settings...

Excellent score there 5th ghost! You never cease to amaze me :)

And on a third note, anyone have any good suggestions for next week's game?
