My capture card doesn't seem to lock on to the Atari picture properly, even though the picture is fine thru a TV. I get the same result with both a 800XL and 130XE. (See attachment for a screenshot.)

Any ideas on how to improve it? Does the Atari simply produce a poorer quality signal making it harder for a capture card to 'grab' onto?

One thing I'm going to try if put the Atari thru a VCR then capture the VCR output. I'll let you know if the result of that is any better.

Try using a monitor cable. Plug that into the 'video in' or composite input of your capture card. You will get a much better picture with less RF issues.

Agreed.

Also you can fix the fuzz if you decide to void your warranty on the capture card. You can snap off the plate and adjust the little pots inside of it, for better reception.

My brother was goofing around with my wintv go and he was able to get better reception that way.

Occasionally you'll find a capture device that doesn't like non-standard video devices like the Atari (with a non-interlaced picture and all). Definitely try a composite hook-up, though.

Thanks for the replies! Vintage Fun World .com has some cables so I may go with that.

Its not the RF modulator only. Have you used different switchboxes and cables? I have found that just moving the slide on the switchbox on my tv card. They do make a difference. My screens have been worse than that screenshot. Get the composite cable if you really need it.
