Can a US Doubler enhanced 1050 drive read both sides of an XF-551 double-sided double density formatted floppy?

No, since the reverse side on a normal drive is a "flippy" and the data would be written in the opposite direction.
Mods like USD and Happy are firmware - the drive mechanism remains the same (ie - only 1 R/W head).

Additionally, I think the 551 uses the timing hole.

In that case, can I use any 5.25" 360K drive mechanism in an XF551?

That should work. I saw warerat use his xf551 mech connected to my ATR8000. The ATR uses std drive mechs.

Any 360K PC drive should work, but some won't let you access the flippy side.

How about a PC program that can read a 360K DSDD disk? I found AtariDsk, but the docs say only works with 180K SSDD disk.
