Hi, new user and first post :)

I picked up a second 800XL last week to use on a daily basis and found the TV connection to be really poor.

The is a lot of "noise" in the picture and small, short hroizontal black lines.

I found my ancient monitor cable and hooked up to a TV with composite inputs and the picture is great.

I'm assuming the RF modulator is on it's way out.

Are the two video sections tied together and can the RF modulator be repaired other than replaced.

I see B&C sells replacements also.

Ideally, I would like all of this computer to be functioning as it will be moved around and probably hooked up to a TV both ways.

BTW, I'm not using a switch box either. I ised a direct connect using the Atari cable and a coax adapter on the set for the TV antenna test.

Cheers Dave

Hi,

I recommend to build an RCA adaptor. This web show how to do, its easy and the output is clean. Its spanish but the graphics say all you need.

How does the composite image compare to the RF image?

It's a significant improvement over RF. The audio and video signals are seperated from each other, and it does reduce a considerable amount of noise. Though the best signal would probably be from S-Video (seperate Chroma-luma connectors).

The other 800XL and 600Xl I have have typical RF output I've come to expect from these machines, not the best but clear enough to use.

The Composite picture OTOH is clean and sharp.

I want to use both outputs, so I'm assuming I have to repair or replace the RF modulator.

I'm assuming the RF modulator may not be able to be fixed?

Are there descreet components that are replacable in the RF module?

Has anyone ever repaired one and can make some suggestions as to waht to check for?

Cheers Dave

You may just need to retune the modulator, get an RF adjustment tool (plastic hex wrench) and see if that fixes it.

I like using the Chroma and luma on the 800 its very clear on a 1702.

Have you checked the switchbox and cable too. Do you use the switchbox and cable with other equipment?
