Wellllllll, here's an interesting variation on Pong:

No Pain, No Game
Painstation Home Page

Make sure you check out the "Gallery of Pain" at the second link. Wow.

Yeah, I mean to comment on that as well and forgot. It is pretty sad, especially given this was an article on wired.com.

I don't think you need to worry about seeing that in a local arcade anytime soon. The threat of lawsuits in this country will keep it off our shores for some time to come.

It sounds like something you would see on a late night sci-fi show as a "punishment device" for disloyal humans..

Hate to disagree with most of you, but the Painstation looks like the coolest idea in ages. I'd buy one!

as always,

I read the article in Wired. I understand that some people refuse to let go even when they are losing because it makes you look wimpy that you do. Someone was even bleeding and still refused to let go.

I think Sony is also trying to get the name changed since it is too close to the playstation.

Some gamers are notorious for searching out, finding, and using all sorts of cheats, hacks, pre-programmed level skips, end-arounds, et cetera. Imagine this philosophy extended to the Painstation. What ways would people "cheat" the system? A few ideas come to mind..

* Soak your playing hand in ice for long periods of time to dead the nerves.
* Get rip-roaring drunk and have somebody prop you up on a chair to play.
* Inject novacaine into specific areas of your hand right before the game starts.
* Rewrite/hack the program so your pain level is decreased by 50%, or perhaps..
* Rewrite/hack the program to INCREASE your opponent's pain level by 50%.
* Stick your arm in a mannequin arm and still play the game with a fake hand.

Any other ideas? ;)

Hack the program so that you receive no shock at all regardless of how badly you do.

Wasn't this Idea presented in an early 80's Roger more James bond movie?
Octapussy I think it was
in any case, Mr. Bond has just Met his Nemisis for the first time ina morocon casino, where his nemsis challanges him to a video game/
the video game is some kind of pool table shaped battlefield game, and each opponant must do battle, and the player feels the pain of his dying troops thru the joystick?

Page 50 in the new Maxim magazine (oct 2002) has a description of the pain station in it

here is the last line of it

Why would anyone create something so sadistic?

We repeat: they're German ;)

I had forgetten about that. I don't remember exactly which movie it was (I remember that Connery was playing Bond at the time). I remember that he won at the end (you knew that Bond had to win at the end).

I couldve sworn it was a Moore Bond, but YEAH!
I got back up on this!
it was early eighties, But I remember watching this on that new fangled HBO thing as a kid.
but quite frankly, I would love for drunken hooligans to play the pain station at the pub, it would be just as amusing as watching the same hooligans try to hit on the wait staff

What would you estimate to be the realistic chances that this game will come stateside? 3 %? 10%? more? less?

How could a Coctail video game be evil?

Reminds me of Alien Nation.
The aliens couldn't stand salt water so there was a machine
that 2 of them where strapped in and they pressed a button
to fire Salt water at each other. I forget the point but I think
it was punishemet for something

I'd call the painstation a Psychological experimet
rather than a game.
Still, I want 2 :D
