So the Wii has two USB 2.0 ports on the back of it. But what will these be used for? Right now I can't see a purpose for them and they sorta feel like they will go the way of the USB ports on the PS2 did. In other words, never being used and finally removed in a later rev.

Are there any USB devices that work on the Wii as of yet? I do have a USB keyboard but haven't tried plugging it in to see if actually does anything.

Just curious if anyone has played with the USB at all or knows what the purpose of these will be in the future?

:?

Um, that's not true. I have a slim SCPH-75001 PS2 and it has two USB ports on the front. Plus, I don't know about other peripherals, but I know the game SingStar has a USB adapter that takes two microphones. My Walmart was recently demoing it on a slim PS2.

For whatever external device they might want to make in the future! :P

I mean, I suppose they could take them out, but if it's cost efficient to have the ports available, I guess why not have them and give the machine more flexibility for add-ons.

Nevermind the Eye-Toy or the Guncon2.

Correction : I posted the wrong information. This is what I should have posted:

Adapter for connecting your Wii to internet:

http://www.nintendo....lineWiredTS.jsp

Quote

Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector

If you do not have a compatible wireless router or other home networking equipment, you can connect the Wii console to the Internet using the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector (sold separately), which enables the Wii console to share a PC's Internet connection (This is the same connector that Nintendo DS owners have used to connect to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection).

The Connector plugs into a USB port on the PC, which is connected to the Internet, and creates a wireless connection between the PC and the Wii console.

Karaoke Revolution uses the USB Mics/Headsets too.

It had some good uses on the PS2 and I'm glad they had them.

As for the Wii? It's only been out for a few days... I'm sure there will be something announced in the future. :)

You have listed good examples...but guess what?! None of what you have stated gamewise appeals to me. I have never been into any of the karoke games and nothing on the eye-toy has appealed to me either. I would like to see the USB ports become more flexible for something like a USB keyboard...because typing Mii messages and whatnot just sucks letter by letter...

And I wasn't aware that the slimline PS2 still had the USB ports, for some reason I thought they were removed. Okay..I guess the firewire port is a much better example then. As I don't know of anything that used the firewire port on the first rev PS2s...

That's what that port was called... I couldn't remember the name of it. Firewire... hmm. It has been useless for me, that's for sure.

With all the Wiimote attachements already, I'm sure there will be some use made for the USB ports. (Virtual Controller, Steering Wheel, Nunchuk) Perhaps a future product will work via a USB connection.

As for USB Keyboards... please make this happen Nintendo! I don't wanna play Animal Crossing Wii without a keyboard!

Nintendo has a LAN Adapter coming out sometime in January that will use one of the USB ports, but it isn't need unless you want to connect your Wii to the net and don't have wireless or the USB WiFi drive for PC.

Has anyone tried using a USB Drive yet? In theory, the port could also be used for a hard drive, but I believe that Nintendo has claimed they aren't currently supporting those.

Tried a 256mb drive, didn't see it. It would charge my iPod, along with a RCA MP3 player, as long as the system was on.

I also did attempt to plug in my Saitek Eclipse keyboard and the blue LEDs lit up. But I wasn't able to get any of the keys to respond. Then again, i don't remember if I actually tried using it in the Wii message area or not though. Might have to try that again...

Actually, both ports on my Wii are in use. One for the LAN adaptor (wired > wireless) and the other for a sensor for NFL Training Camp.

What use does a hard drive do on the usb on a wii? Also off topic would be nice if someone had a guide for playing an emulator on the wii. been wanting to try that for a long time..

Loading ISO images stored on the harddrive. A hacked Wii can use loaders to run Wii games from images in the Harddrive, no more DISCS!

ISOs. Either by downloading or copying from actual discs. You put them on the HDD, run the HDD loader software on the Wii, and load up an ISO to play. Look up Homebrew Channel, USB Loader GX, and Wii Softmodding. It's likely been explained several times on these forums if you'll search, too.

Yes it has, but Jinkx hasn't even got the HBC on his console yet...

At this point (as he's likely at the most recent dashboard version on the Wii, he'll more than likely have to run the letterbomb exploit to get the HomeBrew Channel on the Wii to even get started)
