Interest Check - Instant collection: classic to 16 bit

Wed Apr 18, 2012 10:55 AM

It looks like I am going to be a homeowner for the first time within a year. As a compromise, I am agreeing to give up the doubles of my collection. I'd like to see it go to someone new in the hobby (no resellers), but it would cover these systems:

Atari 2600
Intellivision
Odyssey 2
Colecovision
SMS
NES (games only)
Genesis

The systems and games will probably fill 5 to 10 tubs, so it would likely have to be a local pickup, I live in Pennsylvania.

This is just in the preliminary stage, being floated out there.

My first memory of this game is seeing it in a commercial. I cannot find this on youtube.

Am I making up this commercial?

Donkey Kong Arcade Review

Wed Aug 31, 2011 4:23 PM

The original Donkey Kong for Intellivision I remember when it came out. My grandfather's house had an Intellivision with 5 games: Poker, Tennis, Skiing, Bowling, and Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong was that popular. The game itself I played a bit, but the Colecovision version was nice. The TI-99/4A was much superior to anything the consoles released.

Based on this, my interest in this new version was high.

The gameplay is difficult, ultimately affected by the hardware. The disc is poor in steering Mario and climbing up/down ladders. I have not tried the joystick attachments. Sometimes you don't get points for jumping barrels. In The King of Kong, Rob M------- said the game is incredibly hard and most games last 90 seconds or so. After one session, I made it to the elevators and didn't make it to where the springs are.

There is an option to play as three characters. One is the standard Mario, possibly with an extended jump, another allows you to jump with the hammer, another allows you to climb ladders with the hammer.

The graphics and sound are outstanding as a faithful recreation of the original arcade. There is title music. The barrels are thrown and rolled. There is a beep for when you reach the high score. We have the intermission where Donkey Kong falls and hits his head.

The packaging includes a standard box, which reminded me of the INTV releases. The overlay is OK, but I would have marked the "3" as that is what you use to select the third character. The manual is in colour and sturdy. The cartridge shell is a recycled one, so you will need to clean it. I didn't mind that.

Overall, this is a game for INTV players. Due to the difficulty I had with the disc, I can't see casual players getting alot of enjoyment of it. It is a labor of love, and one that is a can't miss for those of us with memories of the first Intellivision Donkey Kong game.
