FTe made an adapter to drop a 65816 into your XL; I've got one somewhere in my Atari cave. Never encountered any software problems.

Their use of excessively soft gold for the pins, on the other hand, has resulted in periodic hardware problems...

Could GORF be a diagnostic cart - taking control of the system before all of the OS init routines are called? I seem to recall Star Raiders does that; maybe GORF does as well.

So are you going to hardwire a "max windows" value, or permit users to set memory preferences? WIth each window requiring up to 8k (fullscreen), four windows could need up to 32K. On a 130xe where SDX is using a bank as well, that's only 16K expanded memory remaining.
