Master System 3D games (finally!)

Tue Jan 24, 2012 10:28 PM

Last night and tonight I finally went to the effort to unpack my TV and set up my Sega Power Base converter in a Genesis.  I got out my new 3D glasses and all my 3D games (that I've had since the 1990's and never played).  These are the games I have and my impressions:

Blade Eagle 3D: Vertical shooter: the 3D effect is OK, once you know what to look for, but the gameplay is not easy.  You have to keep moving from the upper level to the lower level.  This reminds me of one of the Virtual Boy games, Vertical Force, but not as good.

Maze Hunter 3D: Walk around and hit bad guys and get to the end of the maze.  The 3D effect is really good and the game is pretty fun, actually kind of addicting.  I like it.

Missile Defense 3D:  I can't find my light gun, but it looks like fun.  I'll find it eventually. This game is still shrink wrapped, so I'm looking forward to going back in time in my mind.

Space Harrier 3D: I never liked the 2D version much, even in the arcade, but this one is better because you can actually see how far away the targets are.  I liked it.

Zaxxon 3D:  I always kind of liked Zaxxon in the arcade, but none of the home versions really did it for me.  I might play the coleco version once in a while, but never for very long.  This version is not isometric, but actually head on (like Star Wars Arcade) and pretty darn fun.  After playing, I noticed there was a HSC thread on it a while back.  Maybe I'll compare myself to that.

My overall reaction?  These games were pretty darn good 3D games for 20+ years ago.  After I took the ear pieces off the glasses and jimmied a nice big rubber band to hold them on my head, they fit comfortably over my glasses and stay on.  I'm looking forward to trying the light gun and 3D glasses with Missile Defense 3D once I find them.  And I'm even thinking of tracking down the 3D driving game Out Run 3D and paying big(ger) bucks than I'm used to for it.

Which ones do you like, dislike, and why?

What about all the batteries in those carts?

I tried out an NES game I've had for awhile (Destiny of an Emperor). Turns out it's an RPG (walk around and find things, talk to people, and do battle type game, lots of text, menu choices, etc). I get bored with these kinds of games, but I played for a few minutes anyway. Got bored. Looked it up and it seems to have gotten pretty good reviews, but...

Anyway, it has a save feature, but it was zero-ed out so I took the cart apart and saw that it has a CR2032 battery soldered in, which was apparently dead. This got me to thinking about batteries in carts that sit in a box for years and years.

I assume someday one or more of these batteries will leak, possibly damaging the game. Have any of you thought about this and removed the batteries from these games you may never play again (or very rarely) to prevent this? It would actually be a pretty big project since it requires opening up every game that has a battery (sometimes maybe opening up the game to find out if it even HAS a battery), probably de-soldering the battery in most cases, and then reversing the process if/when I ever wanted to play again with a battery.

Not sure it would be worth it, except maybe for any rare games, but basically curious how many collectors would go this far? I doubt if I'll do it, but just wondering...
